I wanted to thank the people who answered my query last week and recommended the 1949 Rosenkavalier with Szell conducting Reining, Novotna, and Gueden. This is a GREAT performance (Rosewaenge's turn as the Italian Singer aside); I
like Reining far better here than on her studio recording. She sounds much more youthful than many Marschallins choose to play the role, and it's an approach that suits her voice at the time of this performance very nicely. I'd firmly recommend this recording to anyone else who hasn't heard it, especially because you can buy it (on Lys) online from Berkshire Record Outlet
for only $5.97! (No, I don't work for Berkshire, and I don't know anyone who does.) A performance this lovely for less than half the cost of a regular new CD is as good a bargain as you'll find.
