Greetings all,
I just picked up a new Sly & Robbie album called "Friends", only two
original songs, the rest is cover material featuring pop stars. (But I couldn't resist it on first listening and brought it home.)
Tracklist:
1. Friday - Instrumental, featuring a nearly out of the mix DJ vocal
by Robbie, and some great piano by Robbie Lyn.
2. Night Nurse - Mick "Simply Red" Hucknall giving a very fine
rendition of Gregory's classic.
3. Seems To Me I'm Losing - Ali "UB40" Campbell takes Dobby Dobson's
classic, with help provided by brother Robin and the horns of Brian
Travis, this certainly has more of a real reggae vibe than UB40's
own recent material.
4. Only A Smile - I love Maxi Priest's voice, and he sings up to
expectations covering John Holt's classic, maybe Maxi is the modern
John Holt, loved for his voice, but often ambigious received in the
reggae community because of his material. But this is wicked.
5. You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To - A Cole Porter song I never heard
before, sung by a woman I never heard of before; Liba. But we will
certainly have to watch her, I hope Sly & Robbie give her a full
length album release.
6. Penny Lover - Ambilique, one of the best voices to emerge on the
scene last year, does a better rendition of this song than Lionel
Richie himself ever would dream of.
7. Theme from "Mission Impossible" - Their huge instrumental hit, Sly
& Robbie certainly are able to prove instrumental reggae (not dub)
doesn't need to be boring, even in these digital times.
8. Candy Girl - Penned by Sly, Lloyd "Gitsy" Willis, Handel Tucker and
singer Danny Madden hopefully is only a teaser, showing what Danny
Madden will bring in the future.
9. Ghetto Girl - Is the second appearance of Mick Hucknall, now doing
the Dennis Brown song like he never sang anything but reggae
before.
10. All This Love - An El DeBarge song, featuring vocals by to me
unknown One Plus One, shouldn't be unknown for too long. Sly &
Robbie picked a set of perfect vocalists for lovers rock with Liba,
Ambilique and One Plus One.
11. Shoulder To Cry On - Liba proves her vocal capabilities again on
this Gary Benson/ Winston Sela song to full effect.
12. Satisfaction - No ? YES ! Featuring Keith Richards on Guitar and
with magnificent vocals by Ambilique (lead) and One Plus One
(backing) this a great cover, not too much a reggae song, although
you recognize Sly's drum patterns instantly.
13. Nightnurse (Jah Wobble Radio Mix) - This Jah Wobble mix is over a
layer of strings and keyboard effects, different but good, could be
a major mainstream hit, but I prefer Sly & Robbie's own production,
because it's got that little haunting feel in the riddim, that also
made Gregory's own version so appealing.
14. Friday (Street Mix) - Mixed by Peter Craige in London (UK), this is
an instant dancefloor filler, I love this mix, that reminds of an
old gogo-funk vibe.
15. Candy Girl (Street Mix) - Also mixed by Peter Craige, not enough
left of the reggae riddim, but not enough vanished either, I
strongly prefer the original mix.
Resuming: This album is well worth buying, proving Sly & Robbie are
still a force to be reckoned with, with a good ear for talentful
vocalists. And yes, some pop stars (even UB40 singers Mikael) can sing
*real* reggae.
Respect,
