Doesn't Ancestry only have records on those who've signed up?
Wow--Sarn Dyer--what did ever happen to him? There have been a lot of
people through this newsgroup over the years.

Of course not: Ancestry has bejillions of records like ship manifests
and birth/death records from Lithuania and all kinds of microscopic
records. These are not procured solely for names that appear in their
own subscriber list.

Didn't know that--thanks. I've been studiously avoiding the genome
sequencing people.

We all draw privacy lines where we draw them. After mentioning some
stuff about my family and vague travels, a kindly person (on facebook)
sent me an image file of a ship's manifest: 1953, the S.S. United
States, a crossing from New York to Bremen where my own name and those
of my family appear. It was hair-raising.

I know I've seen you post about more recent travels.
I hope this was a FB "friend" and not some random stalker. My FB
profile is actually public; I should probably change that.
But FB is obviously only a small part of the problem. A few years back
my niece, whose boyfriend is German (they met at Cornell) presented her
with a photo of my paternal grandfather rocking a Hitler moustache (he
was naturalized in 1943, and looking at the photo and guessing his age,
I'm thinking the photo was from about then. That was scary to me.

I met Sarn Dyer when he was a judge in the Benidorm International Music Competition. I have also just seen his name in videos of the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral. One of the pieces was a beautiful cantata, 'Psalm 104', by William Lovelady with new
