Last night when I was at the Newfoundland Folk Arts Society’s
regular Wednesday night Folk Night, which has been going for
49 years, at The Ship Pub, I caught the duo of Maria Cherwick
on fiddle and backing vocals and Sherry Ryan on guitar and
lead vocals, with a special guest appearance from the third
member of Flower Hill, Andrea Monro, on banjo and lead
and harmony vocals, at the end of the first set.

Before leaving I picked up the 7-track instrumental CD
Maria Cherwick and Jockey Special, which was recorded
entirely live off the floor by what essentially constitutes
a Newfoundland traditional music supergroup. They are
Maria Cherwick of The Kubasonics and The Newfoundland
Symphony Orchestra on fiddle leading the group, along
with gypsy/Newfoundland ace guitarist Duane Andrews,
Josh Ward of Hey Rosetta on bass and mandolin,
Andrew Dale of The Once on bouzouki and mandolin,
Darren “Boobie Brown” of The Burning Hell on tenor
banjo, mandolin, and bouzouki, and Aaron Collis
of Rum Ragged and The Dardanelles on button accordion.

I have had two listens so far and am very impressed,
and highly recommend it. It is a mix of traditional
Newfoundland tunes and others composed in the
same vein, along with a Ukrainian slow air and a
meditative piece composed by Andrew Dale. The
first single from the CD is the first track and is entitled
Murphy’s, which I think Maria said last night is named
after an Irish pub in Mexico. There are reels, Newfoundland
singles, jigs, polkas, a traditional Ukrainian slow air,
and a meditative piece composed by Andrew Dale
    entitled Absent Friends.

For more details, and to preview some tracks, see Maria’s
web page http://mariacherwick.com/ , where you can also
order the CD. And if you wish to stream or download
the CD (or even just that single to start), there are links
to Bandcamp and Spotify in the upper right hand
corner of the web page. And note that on the first
Friday of every month Bandcamp forgoes its revenue
share so all proceeds go to the artist.
