Ms Ustvolskaya was also a very significant writer for percussion, in particular
the kettledrums whose dissonant part in Symphony 1 for two boy sopranos and orchestra is indicative of things to come. In terms of ferocity she blew Mr Prokofiev out of the water.
One might also add among women composers Dame Ethel Smyth (particularly the Mass in D and the Overture to the Wreckers and a couple of concertos) and Rebecca Clarke wrote some seriously beautiful music.
