From Tom Del Rosso@21:1/5 to All on Wed Dec 9 00:07:04 2020
I'd like to buy a movie version of The Magic Flute (filmed staged operas
    lack the best of both).

    Know a good one?

In German with optional English subtitles please.

For a fun movie version, how about Ingmar Bergman's 1975 film "the Magic
Flute" which the British Film Institute re-released in 2018 as a dual DVD
and hi-definition Blu-ray release. I bought it from the BFI on the South
Bank London and really enjoyed it although I've not watched it since then.
The problem for you is that it's in Swedish with English subtitles. https://shop.bfi.org.uk/the-magic-flute-dual-format-edition.html

    It's listed on amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Flute-DVD-Blu-ray/dp/B076MDDRDZ

Ingmar Bergman, of all people, made a Zauberfloete movie. It was
essentially Haakon Hagergard's first international appearance.

    [detail not offered by Alan!]

In addition to the Bergman film, another movie version is Kenneth
Brannaugh's "Magic Flute," which is set to WWI. Regardless of what you
think of the tanks, etc. in the setting, the singing is really good.

However, like Bergman, it's not in German, but in English.

I hated the Brannagh version. Most newer versions have revisionist sets (AKA Eurotrash) and sometimes, even worse, puppets. The Bergman is still the most satisfying Zauberflote I have seen other than live, even if it is in Swedish.

Did the Met never put either the Chagall or the Hockney version on tape?

I know I saw the Hockney Turandot in Chicago, but I don't remember
whether the Hockney Flute was in New York or Chicago.

The recent MET Flute production was the Taymor one with puppets, hated it. She also did an Oedipus Rex of Stravinsky conducted by Ozawa with puppets, unwatchable..

Presumably the half-length "child-friendly" Flute they were promoting
so relentlessly for years? Peter Gelb is not a Good Thing.

I never did see *The Lion King*, but apparently that's rather good.

*Oedipus Rex* is an oratorio, never meant to be staged. Lyric Opera
of Chicago did a staged version of Handel's *Samson* with Jon
Vickers being rolled around the stage singing behind the beat on
a huge cart like a French Revolution tumbril. Thirty-odd Handel
operas, and they chose to do an oratorio?!?!

(Well, there was also a minimalist *Serse*. Turns out it's like
Bizet's Pearl Fishers -- all the good stuff, TheLargofromXerxes,
    is right at the start.)
