Aside from surfing and hot rod racing, anyone know of any songs about
    sports?

There is an unreleased Beach Boys song about baseball, and the Four
Seasons did a nifty song about bowling (for a Brunswick commercial) that
was not released to the public.

    What about soccer, basketball, hockey?

    Nothing? Nothing at all?

It's too bad our old friend Taliesyn isn't here. With his extensive
knowledge of Canadian artists, if there exists a hockey song he's the one
    who'd know it.

And then, though it's off-topic, the greatest rock and roll baseball
record of all, John Fogerty's "Centerfield."

    --------------------
Here's a quote from John Fogerty's autobiography, _Fortunate Son_:

<<I thought I was really tempting fate by doing a rock and roll song about baseball. It hadn't happened before. Okay, there was a song called "Say
Hey (the Willie Mays Song)" by the Treniers, but that really wasn't about baseball. It was about Willie. The two don't fit, never did. I wanted to
do it anyway. I deeply love both. I love the way that old times are
revered in baseball, all the record keeping....The first book I ever read
was _Lou Gehrig: Boy of the Sandlots_. Because I could run, I was an
athletic kid, but I didn't hit the ball a long way. And I couldn't throw a lick. In the third grade we had to write an essay on what we would do if we were president. At the end of mine, I said that I wasn't just going to
throw out the first ball at the World Series: I was going to pitch the first three innings!

<<The fact that "Centerfield" became an actual radio hit was great, but watching the song get adopted by baseball fans and Little Leagues was incredible. When my boys were in Little League, we got to hear it during
    our warm-ups. Awesome.>>

Good quote, and Fogerty's book is well worth reading even for 50s fans
since his stated favorites and influences would almost all be very much on-topic here.

Stompin' Tom Connors (closer to folk or country than rock) had "The Hockey Song" in 1973.

Some really good replies in this thread!

And I suppose I should add what was at the time 'the newest sport

It's still worth mentioning here, though.

Isn't it from that period where he was accused of copying Creedence
Clearwater Revival? There was a lawsuit about a song from the eighties,
it only happened because of CCR's relationship with its record company.
It was "CCR Style" but that's because he was the foundation of CCR's
    style.

So his songs from that period did sound a lot like CCR.

He always sounded a lot like CCR because, as you say, he was CCR. (Some
CCR recordings are essentially Fogerty solos, including the
instruments.) But the 1984 lawsuit was about "The Old Man Down the
Road" which Fantasy Records said was plagiarized from "Run Through the
Jungle." I can't think of any other instance where an artist was sued
for self-plagiarism. Quite a piece of work was Saul Zaentz.

Beach Boys' "Be True to Your School"
"Push em back, Push em back, way back" etc.

On that one, Zaentz sued Fogerty for defamation and the title got
changed on later releases to, IIRC, Vanz Kant Danz. Fogerty might have
done better signing with a mobbed-up label rather than Fantasy.

Don't know if this applies but now that I've read the thread I can't get it out of my head:

Beach Boys' "Be True to Your School"
"Push em back, Push em back, way back" etc.

There are probably more songs that have some sports reference in them
    than songs specifically about sports.

"American Pie" has a line that must be about football "the players tried
    for a forward pass".

Mealoaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" has a play by play that must
derive from baseball, even if in this case it's about something else.

There's a bit in Steve Miller's "Livin' in the USA" that invokes a car
race, I guess it's not the lyrics, but you hear cars revving or something
    like that.

I might have though of a few others, and now forgot them.

Probably the majority of songs provided in this thread (almost certainly
after your suggestions) are NOT ABOUT sports. A casual reference to a sport doesn't make a song about sports.

None of your suggestions contain the words ping pong even as a casual
reference to the sport. And how in the world can an instrumental be about sports?

    -------------
Would you say "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" is a song about sports? If you want to get technical, then no, it's about the experience of watching
baseball, not about the game itself. But it's probably the most beloved sports song of all time.

I saw those Liverpool fans on TV the other night, and I don't think I'd risk telling them that "You'll Never Walk Alone" isn't about soccer.
