• LaRS now Rolling Stone's #4

From Willie@21:1/5 to All on Fri Sep 17 11:00:46 2021
Rolling Stone has re-done its top songs of all time list, and Bob has dropped from #1 to #4, supplanted by "Respect," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" (?), and "A Change Is Gonna Come" (and just edging "Smells Like Teen Spirit").

The description of LaRS says "Dylan began writing an extended piece of verse — 20 pages long by one account, six in another — that was, he said, 'just a rhythm thing on paper all about my steady hatred, directed at some point that was honest.'" (
    https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/best-songs-of-all-time-1224767/bob-dylan-like-a-rolling-stone-3-1225334/)

All due respect now goes to Aretha.

Because I was surprised to see "Fight the Power" rated so high, I listened to it and was surprised to hear Chuck D say "Elvis was a hero to most... straight-up racist that sucker was, simple and plain,” I looked into this a bit and see from this Peter
Guralnick piece that Chuck backed off that comment: https://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/11/opinion/11guralnick.html

Glad to see the acknowledgement, finally, but it smells like fake woke to me. Them wake folk never followed through when they had the chance.

But, after all, isn't LARS a rock-n-roll anthem of misogyny?

Mick doesn't just scream. He gets a great work-out on the stage. I don't think Bob is that fit...not that I'd like to see him copy a Mick Jagger show. It wouldn't fit his songs.

But Bob should be working out like that behind the scenes, too, instead of just sitting in his bus on his tushy, and shuffling up and down the block, like me.

Yes, it really is a move for the current awareness ... look at our historic Vice Presidet for one example...
Agree. Just unthinkable back when LARS was written...
Did you watch the WATCHMEN HBO series?

Very illuminating essay on America's past..

I taught at a little school in Taos (the Taos Valley School, formerly called DaNahazli (Navajo for “spring will come again”) from 1979-82. For the last two years, the Director was from Hibbing. He told me that he and Bob, being the only Jews in their
class, were rivals, and had a couple of fistfights. He said Bob wasn't much of a fighter, which maybe is why he took up boxing.

Doesn't Bob box? I thought he had a gym/bar or something like it in Santa Monica...

I taught at a little school in Taos (the Taos Valley School, formerly called DaNahazli (Navajo for “spring will come again”) from 1979-82. For the last two years, the Director was from Hibbing. He told me that he and Bob, being the only
Jews in their class, were rivals, and had a couple of fistfights. He said Bob wasn't much of a fighter, which maybe is why he took up boxing.
    That's charming...
Bob did, however, have a run-in with AJ on Elizabeth Street long ago (it was provoked...however) when apparently people on the street had to pull Bob off of him as he was bashing his head into the street...

Dylan did punch the guy out in the HEARTS OF FIRE movie....

The Rolling Stone list was put together from a vote of 250 people.

Who Voted for the 500 Greatest Songs?
More than 250 artists, journalists, and industry figures — from Megan Thee Stallion to U2’s the Edge to Yaya Bey — helped determine the all-new list.

Voters were asked to submit ranked ballots listing their 50 favorite songs of all time. Votes were tabulated, with the highest-ranked song on each list receiving 300 points, the second highest 290 points, and so on down to 44 points for number 50. More
than 4,000 songs received at least one vote.

"Respect" clearly fits better in today's world, with hip hop being the dominant style of music over the past 35 years or so, and with Aretha's pretty recent death. That song gets played all the time in movies, commercials, on shows like American Idol,
etc...also the Aretha movie called "Respect."

Kids in grammar school and Jr. High are likely to know "Respect" but highly unlikely to know "Like A Rolling Stone."

We beat Rolling Stone to it with our Top 500 Rock and Roll songs list here.

Here are the Dylans on the list.

    10. Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
    53. Mr. Tambourine Man - Byrds / Bob Dylan
    190. Blowin' In The Wind - Bob Dylan
    315. The Times They Are A'Changin' - Bob Dylan
    401. Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan
    431. Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan / Guns N' Roses
    466. Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan

Rolling Stone is drifting into the future...
Hmmm...Respect instead of LARS...you may be on to something...
"Respect" clearly fits better in today's world, with hip hop being the dominant style of music over the past 35 years or so, and with Aretha's pretty recent death. That song gets played all the time in movies, commercials, on shows like American
Idol, etc...also the Aretha movie called "Respect."

Kids in grammar school and Jr. High are likely to know "Respect" but highly unlikely to know "Like A Rolling Stone."

We beat Rolling Stone to it with our Top 500 Rock and Roll songs list here.

    https://digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_songsddd.html

Here are the Dylans on the list.

    10. Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
    53. Mr. Tambourine Man - Byrds / Bob Dylan
    190. Blowin' In The Wind - Bob Dylan
    315. The Times They Are A'Changin' - Bob Dylan
    401. Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan
    431. Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan / Guns N' Roses
    466. Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan
Maybe Dylan should retire LARS, the way the Stones have done with Brown Sugar...
BTW, the Stones will be playing in Minneapolis this weekend. I just may grab my noise blocking earphones and run across town to see them...:-)
Waste of time. Let them roll, maybe through the grate.
I just couldn't find the energy to go see them. I heard Satisfaction once, when it came out. That is a good song. But that was enough...<yawn>...

Besides, the Stones are so 1-iv-v-1. They wouldn't know a ii/v if it hit them in the face...

************'Apathy 83', if I recall correctly came about after Hunter met Bob Dylan backstage at Madison Square Garden after a Rolling Stones gig. Dylan asked Hunter what he thought of the Stones concert. 'Insipid', said Hunter. Bob Dylan replied, 'Yeah,
apathy for the devil', this is a song that has become one of Hunter’s best political statements as he rants against corruption in high places. ***********
