• Seat loaner test

From Sticks@21:1/5 to All on Fri Apr 16 10:27:26 2021
Hey all! Let me get you all a drink. I gotta stupid story to tell.

I got this '09 Ultra, had it since new. I'm kinda tall, 6'6", so when I
bought it I got the HD Tall Boy seat and I like the 2" extra legroom and
being pushed back that little bit from the handlebars. I usually try
and make the day of it when I go out, and typically go between 350 to
500 miles each day. I've had half a dozen 800 mile days, and on good
long summer days it is not uncommon to do 600 miles.

Problem with the Tall Boy, is I do get a little numb ass, or just plain
sore at the end of the day. I hate fucking up a great day riding
because my seat is uncomfortable at the end.

So, I thought I'd test out one of the loaners. Got a good tech at the
counter at our local stealer, and he suggested the Hammock seat. Called
the hammock I guess because it rides above the frame, and supposedly
hangs. The Sundowner he said actually sits on the frame, but otherwise
    is very similar.

As far as position, it actually felt very similar to the Tall Boy as far
as being further from the handlebars. I was surprised. As far as
comfort, I have to admit it was great. Did this a couple weeks ago, and
it was the first time I had been out this year. Historically, the more
I ride, the less I get sore ass. So I figured if it felt good on my
initial rides that would say something on the comfort of the seat.

Did 420 miles the first day, and 410 the second. No sore ass. However,
it did something totally unexpected and that I had failed to consider beforehand. It completely changed the feel and handling of the bike. I
always felt like I was in complete control of the Ultra. Coming to
stops, I usually didn't even put my feet down, and even seemed to come
to complete stops very balanced and maybe a twist of the handlebars
slightly would be enough to get a light to change without having to drop
off the pegs. Not so with this seat.

First day I rode alone and pulled into a gas station mid-day and not
really considering this issue, I'm embarrassed to say, I suddenly found
the bike falling to the left side, went so far I could not bring it back
up from the seat, and had to softly lay it down on the rear luggage
railings! I was shocked, and had never done this on this bike before.
Fucking embarrassing to have to ask for help to pick up your HD. No
damage, but I thought the two beers I had earlier must have had
something to do with it. I was totally sober by the time I got home,
and noticed I was still not comfortable at low speed. Started wondering
if it was the added width perhaps.

Second day I rode two up, and again comfort was great while riding.
Didn't stop at any watering holes, but again felt uncomfortable all day
at low speeds and stopping. By the end of the day I was convinced that
though the seat solved the numb ass, I simply couldn't ride around all
the time having lost the feeling of control I was used to.

I returned the seat, explained the issue, and talked for a while.
Counter guy said he'd heard of this before, and suggested I try the
Sundowner. I don't know, I might. But for now I just gonna get my ass
in shape on the old seat and enjoy some miles. Maybe later in the year
I'll try it. For now I guess I'll just stop a little more often if'n I
    need to.

I'll get another round if'n you don't tell my ol' lady I had to lay it
down. I forgot to mention it to her.

Heh, you're probably right. When I was younger and didn't care, either
I could bullshit her about anything, or she just let it go and I didn't
know it. Now that I'm attempting to grow the hell up, I can't get shit
by her. As soon as something comes out of my mouth that ain't the full
truth, I can see in her eyes it didn't work.

You really don't think that seats could change the handling and balance of a bike, but there ya go. You had enough miles to make an educated decision.

She knows, and she's laughing at ya.

There's a very good reason companies like Mustang Seats are still
    in business.

Speaking of Mustang seats , mine has started to crack at the seams .
    Shit it's only 14 years old ! I ain't complainin' though , that seat
has never seen the inside of a garage , and the bike hasn't always been
    kept covered .
Speaking of seats in general , what's an original white leather seat
with pogo and t-bar from a '76 FLH worth ? I got the one that came with
Bag Lady (RIP) in our booth at the antique mall asking $350 ... we have
become a "destination" for biker types in recent years . A lot of those
bikers are "mature adults" that are restoring old bikes or know someone
    who is .
Shit , look at the time ! It's beer:30 ! SHIRLEY ! Roll out that keg
    if'n ya please !
