New York City Mayor Eric Adams delivered a clear message this week to
residents who own and operate illegal vehicles. "You want to terrorize our neighborhoods?" the mayor's office tweeted. "You'll get crushed."

During a press conference held at a Brooklyn auto pound on Tuesday, Adams
spoke about a cooperative effort between the mayor's office and police department to rid city streets of illegal motorbikes. He then had a
bulldozer ceremoniously plow through a lineup of dirt bikes and ATVs. The vehicles, which are illegal to ride in any of New York City's five
boroughs, had previously been confiscated and impounded by the NYPD.

"Today, as we stand in the shadow of the Freedom Tower, we are freeing ourselves from these destructive pieces of machinery," said Adams during
the press conference. "They will be crushed today so that they can never terrorize our city again. Each and every one of them, they will be turned
into scrap metal and eventually recycled."

Police have reportedly seized about 2,000 illegal motorbikes from New
Yorkers since January of this year, according to NYPD Commissioner
Keechant Sewell. That sum marked an 80% increase from the number of dirt
bikes and ATVs removed from city streets during the same period in 2021.

The mayor said he plans to ask the state legislature to implement stricter requirements for ATV retailers so that buyers must provide proof of
insurance and registration before purchasing one.

"Many of these bikes don't have insurance. If they strike someone, the
person is left with medical costs and other out of pocket expenses," he
    said.

Adams introduced a package of safety initiatives that specifically focus
on New York City roadways, sidewalks and subway trains, CBS New York
reports. On the heels of a fatal accident that occurred last week in a
Brooklyn subway station, where a man was dragged to death after his
clothes became caught in the train door while exiting, the mayor announced
a new MTA campaign to educate passengers about the safest places to stand
    on subway platforms.

What a stupid thing to do. They could be sold in places where they're
both legal and practical, resulting in an actual net gain to the City. Grandstanding at its worst.

"we are freeing ourselves from these destructive pieces of machinery"

    How pathetic.

Of course first class media such as CBS News fails to explain _why_
those motorbikes (are they now dirtbikes, ATVs, motorbikes in general
or what?) were "illegal" - other than pointing out that they weren't
insured. Heck, nothing than can be done about this other than
destroying them - or can it?

And let's not miss the opportunity to tell yet another sad story of a
tragic death where a man was dragged to death by a train. For sure he
was wearing an XXL MX jersey and riding an illegal dirtbike because how
else could his clothes become caught in the train door?

Let's just keep our fingers crossed that those illegal bikes did not
contain any illegal substances, such as lead for example. Because then
the destruction site will be contaminated and become inaccessible for
    public health reasons.

    Forever.

Probably because they had no headlights, taillights, mirrors or license
plates. Stuff that dirtbikes used to not need, at least in Kalifornia,
but which are essential for street-legality. Also liability insurance,
for chrissake. Probably loud mufflers too.

Most likely the mayor hasn't a clue. New York. Enough said.

New York again. No further explanation needed.

contain any illegal substances, such as lead for example. Because then
the destruction site will be contaminated and become inaccessible for

Oh yeah. I wish all those chip tuned BMW M135, Volkswagen GTIs, Audi
RS3, Ford Focus ST, Mercedes-AMG A35, Hyundai i20n, etc. with their
double clutches, exhaust flaps, and fake misfire "racetrack only" mods
could be simply confiscated and then run over by a bulldozer while the
major dropps a bold statement such as "You want to terrorize our

Didn't have the foresight to blank out his license plate either. He's the mayor of Doucheachusetts.

Of course. The laundering of drug/prostitution/crime money provides a
certain amount of tax money, so

    PROFIT!

Still seems stupid to not sell the bikes. OTOH, it's NY. What do we
    expect?

if you have a predominantly moral and just society you can
police them with a polite and civil force. if you have
something other than that, then fear tactics work up until
the point that the society realizes the likelihood of
repercussions for bad behavior are minimal. NYC has
been letting criminals back on the street for far too
long, even if the mayor acts all tuff like an 80's
action movie character, the thugs know liberal judges
and prosecutors will let them off the hook. the
bulldozing of the bikes was an idiotic publicity stunt
at best, or a colossal waste of resources at worst.
