An Afghan man seeking asylum was arrested after a 19-year-old
was killed and nine others wounded in a knife attack at a subway
stop near Lyon, France, Saturday. Three of the victims are in
critical condition.
A suspect carrying a knife was arrested. Citing a national
police official, The Associated Press reported that the man was
a 33-year-old Afghan citizen who had applied for asylum in
France and was awaiting a response.
Officials said the attack, which took place in Villeurbanne, a
suburb of Lyon in the southeastern part of France, was not
terrorism related.
French authorities have made no official comment about the
assault. Local police told the AP it was unclear if the victim
knew the man who killed him.
France saw a series of knife attacks last year.
In September, a man wielding a knife at a French movie theater
stabbed two people after a fight broke out in the northern town
of Rennes.
A week earlier, seven people, including two British tourists,
were injured when a man went on a rampage with a knife and an
iron bar in northeastern Paris. The assault came after a series
of knife attacks in France.
While terrorism was ruled out for those two attacks, ISIS
claimed responsibility for another attack two weeks before that,
when a man killed two people with a knife before he was killed
by police in the town of Trappes, west of Paris.
The motive for Saturday’s attack was unclear, police said. Cops
called off a search for second suspect.
