• what else uses the Mauser 7.92x57 round?

From pyotr filipivich@21:1/5 to All on Sun Sep 1 12:04:40 2019
I know it sounds odd, but as I have a case of Mauser 8mm Ii find I
am wondering what besides the various Mauser rifles use the round.

I'd like to find something self-loading, if it possible, but that
    is another, subsequent issue B-)

Any pointers, or am I just going to have to beat up my shoulder
with the bolt action rifle I have?

    Hi Pyotr,

in Germany, 7.92x57IS (rimless) and 7.92x57R (rimmed) are still in
use in many still newly manufactured hunting rifles, the rimless
cartridge also in semi-auto rifles. Without further research
Merkel SR1 and Sauer S303 come to mind.

I don't know about any current military use of the cartridge nor
of any black rifle manufacturers in that calibre.

I suspect that 7.92x57 _might_ be the 30-06 of Europe. A fine cartridge, but now superseded by more recent developments.

The FN semi-automatic model 1949 rifle was made in 7x57mm, 30-06 and
8x57mm. Its basic mechanism is similar to the later FN FAL. In the 1950s
Egypt arranged to produce the Swedish Ljungman semi-automatic
direct impingement rifle in 8x57mm (the Swedish ones were 6.5x55mm).
The Egyptian version is called the Hakim. Both of these have been available from surplus dealers. Of the two I prefer the FN: it has nice aperture
sights and is similar in length and weight to the M-1 Garand. The Hakim
has open sights and for some reason the receiver is unusually long
with a gap of some six inches between the trigger guard and the back
    of the magazine.

Yugoslavia and later Serbia and Croatia used the Zastava M76 designated marksman's rifle in 8x57mm. It uses a modified AK-47 type rotating
bolt mechanism. It has been replaced in both Croatia and Serbia and
may be available surplus. Assault Weapons of Ohio sells a M76 in
8x57mm made from a mixture of old and new parts, including a new
machined steel receiver. It is set up for 196-200 grain bullets
similar to World War 2 German issue.

An M-1 Garand could be re-barreled to 8x57mm. The en block clips
work fine with cartridges shorter than 30-06, and conversions to
    7.62 NATO are common.
