• Tech: Help with 14k3101 pincushion / hourglass no horizontal adjustment

From benson.shaun@gmail.com@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jul 7 19:57:07 2018
    Hi,
I don't normally ask for help but i have met my match with this Wells Gardner 14K3101 / megatouch Type-67 (I think similar to U3100).

When i first got it, it would warm up and go into shutdown, B+ was 127 Volts. i adjusted to 98V.
it had a red tinge and pincushion.

I replaced all electrolytic caps with new.

red tinge was gone but still pincushion both sides.

This is when i noticed that H. Size / trap / pincushion / pincush coil (L1) have little or no effect on display.

I found D3 shorted and C4 failed. I replaced both.

I then re-flowed all solder joints on main and neck board. no change.

I pulled L1 and tested, also checked board traces back to Q1, Q2, Q3.

This monitor is from a Megatouch and i have found other posts with the exact same problem yet i haven't found any fix. any help would be appreciated.

    Regards,
    Shaun

You need to do a ring test on the monitor yoke as it may have one or
more shorted windings. This could lead to pincushion weirdness.

I'm not certain, but I believe that the Bob Roberts LOPT/Ring Tester
will work for yokes, and I can test that hypothesis tomorrow (Monday) if
you are interested in buying one of these from us. I happen to have a
yoke that tests bad with my Sencore test fixture, but hadn't thought to
poke it with the flyback ring tester...

Send me an email or watch the info page on my sales section to see if I remember to do this...

    John,
Thanks for that info. Ill check back in with you in a few days to see if you are able to test it with that q tester.

I am in ontario so nice to know about your website.

I am also going to look around to see if i have a tube and yoke that i can try to see if i get any adjustments. I was only thinking of the chassis so im grateful for your suggestion.

    Regards
    Shaun.

    Hi Shaun,

Bob's LOPT/Flyback tester did not show a problem with a yoke that had
shorted windings - showed normal rings in the green zone. The same tool
works very well for flybacks though, we use it a lot in the shop for
testing those before we rebuild monitors, along with his ESR meter...

My Sencore Computer Monitor Analyzer model CM-2125 did find the shorted
    winding in the yoke.

I am not sure if my (new to me) older Sencore TV-VTR-MATC & Video
Analyzer will work although it does have some sort of ring test. Just
picked up that toy, which should help with fixing early 70s video games
that used TVs that were either vacuum tube or transistorized.
