    What are you using to test the rings on this Kortek monitor? Usually you
    need 7 or 8 rings for the flyback to be good.

    What is happening after you replaced the HOT - did it again short out?
    Does the HOT have a built-in back EMF diode or is there one on the
    circuit board - it may be open. Or if you substituted a different HOT
    the substitute may not have a diode built in...
