i have been playing this game for a very long time. i still enjoy it a
lot. i cant seem to understand which weapons are better than others.
could someone please explain:
total damage 1d1+1 1d4+7 2d5+3 etc
hit bonus +2 +8 +12 etc

The word 'cant' predates the abbreviation "can't" and they differ; you probably didn't say what you intended to mean.

Those means one one-sided die plus one, and one four-sided die plus seven, and two five-sided die plus three. You can calculate from these.
hit bonus +2 +8 +12 etc

Put simply, D & D has three weapons.
In D & D, you'll be using the same weapon at level 17 as you did when
you were level 2 because it's absent variety.
