    Do you grep? With an address at debian, I hope that you might.
    It's often pretty easy to check the source. The [old] code snip is
    else if (r_ptr->flags3 & (RF3_EVIL))
    {
    dam /= 2;
    note = " resists somewhat.";
    if (seen) l_ptr->flags3 |= (RF3_EVIL);
    }
    so "resists somewhat" means half damage.

    I don't think Belegennon is ever going to be better than Isildur, is it?

    Theoretically maybe, but once you have endgame amulets it's unlikely
    enough not to be worth a home slot.

    Similarly, I should clear out my home again - it's full once more...I
    suspect that some of the weapons could be ditched now, given I have a
    shield that provides chaos and disenchant resist?

    You can assume you will cover chaos with the shield, or later the
    Palantir, but you may change eventually to an artifact shield lacking disenchant.

    i) an Amulet of Regeneration
    Found lying on the floor of a cavern at 1550 feet (level 31).

    Speeds regeneration.

    Hard to imagine using this.

    o) the Large Metal Shield of Anárion [12,+20]
    Dropped by Lokkak, the Ogre Chieftain at 1500 feet (level 30).

    Provides resistance to acid, lightning, fire, cold.
    Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
    Sustains strength, intelligence, wisdom, dexterity, constitution.

    Less often useful than you would think.

    p) the Steel Helm of Hammerhand [9,+20] <+3>
    Dropped by Medusa, the Gorgon at 2450 feet (level 49).

    +3 strength, dexterity, constitution.
    Provides resistance to acid, cold, dark, nexus.
    Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
    Prevents paralysis.

    Once you have the other hat with +3 con and an amulet of trickery, this
    isn't interesting to a mage.

    x) the Mattock of Náin (2d8) (+12,+18) <+6, +4>
    Dropped by Glaurung, Father of the Dragons at 3000 feet (level
    60).

    +6 tunneling.
    +4 strength, infravision.
    +20% to searching.
    Slays orcs, trolls, giants, dragons.
    Provides resistance to dark, disenchantment.
    Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.

    Since you already have Calris, no point in saving this.

    Hi,

    I finally found Kelek, so I have banishment and mass banishment. I
    notice that a lot of monsters resist Rend Soul "somewhat" - what does
    that mean in terms of how much damage they avoid? Also, it seems that
    Chaos Strike is more effective at polymorphing monsters than the spell polymorph!

    I still can't quite cover all the resistances yet, but I'm getting there
    now.

    I don't think Belegennon is ever going to be better than Isildur, is it?

    Similarly, I should clear out my home again - it's full once more...I
    suspect that some of the weapons could be ditched now, given I have a
    shield that provides chaos and disenchant resist?

    Hi,

    I finally found Kelek, so I have banishment and mass banishment. I
    notice that a lot of monsters resist Rend Soul "somewhat" - what does

    Do you grep? With an address at debian, I hope that you might.
    It's often pretty easy to check the source. The [old] code snip is
    else if (r_ptr->flags3 & (RF3_EVIL))
    {
    dam /= 2;
    note = " resists somewhat.";
    if (seen) l_ptr->flags3 |= (RF3_EVIL);
    }
    so "resists somewhat" means half damage.

    Thanks, that's a useful pointer. I don't make a habit of grobbling in
    the source, but I certainly ought to be able to use grep ;-)

    I just found 'Narya', which it would seem rude not to wield, but that
    means ditching one of my +6 stat rings. For now I've gone with INT,
    since if I swap in Thranduil I can still keep 18/***, but that does mean
    I lose rStun. So perhaps that's the wrong answer, but I can't otherwise
    keep the hight INT (which is really useful!) - I could swap the Magi for
    the Elfstone, but that then loses me rPois, which seems unwise this
    deep. I could handle that with a shield-swap, but then rchaos+disenchant
    has proved really nice. And even with this lot, swapping weapon is now problematic 'cos of the INT reduction

    Swapping out the CON ring would be daft - far too many HP lost.

    ...so maybe I should store Narya and wait until I don't need the two
    stat rings quite so much? Seems a bit of a shame, but I do have Azaghâl
    for fighting fire-breathers...

    Regards,

    Matthew

    Well, while unresisted plasma stuns, does it still stun if you have
    sound resistance? Assuming sound resistance still reduces damage from
    plasma, it would be correct to avoid the side effect as well. Of
    course, that doesn't mean whoever implemented it did it that way.

    Yes. Sorry, I should have been clearer. Without pStun, I can be stunned
    by plasma and water, even with sound resistance.

    Mmm. I managed to kill Gothmog without it, but I did get through a lot
    of !CCW to keep un-stunning myself. Chaos Strike is quite powerful :)

    The important level is 18/200 INT which gives 0% fail. The next point
    or two reduces spell failure a bit on the toughest spells, but it is
    not worth worrying about.

    I don't remember all the specifics about the changes to stunning.
    It is possible that distance stunning is only done by sound attacks,
    and your sound resistance will protect you. Then the only problem
    is melee against a nasty stunner, which you can avoid. If you are
    carrying scrolls of *Destruction* for emergencies and brain farts,
    I don't think pStun is necessary.

    Hm, I will probably want Mana Storm for the endgame, and at the moment
    it's still too high a failure to be useful.

    I don't remember all the specifics about the changes to stunning.

    Several things stun, including water and plasma.

    Do you still care about stealth?

    I'm not sure! Perhaps not, since I can just banish things I want to
    avoid. In fact, at these levels I keep finding vaults, clearing them
    with mass banish and then filling up with loot - I now have 2 rings of
    power and Tulkas as well as Stonehand's axe.

    Wielding both the =power is, I think, a mistake, as it results in -3 to
    both INT and CON, and the resulting reduction in hit-points feels risky,
    even if speed +31 is pretty nice!
