• What's everyone playing these days - other than GW games?

From Myrmidon@21:1/5 to All on Thu Feb 14 10:56:45 2019
Hello RGMW (or whoever's left of RGMW)

I see a few are still here. So, what are you doing in the way of gaming these days? I have long since stopped playing 40K back when 5th edition came out(and really need to Ebay a lot of my old crap). These days I'm running a campaign of the Mutant:
Year Zero RPG, and playing a ton of board games, as well as a few PC games.

Well child #4 has taken up a lot of time but mostly Board Games, Dragon Rampant and D&D 5e. But I do have 2.5 Gates of Antares armies.

Bugger me, I'd actually forgotten about that.

I'm still collecting British and German armies for Konflikt '47 (with a
small Soviet group), and I've collected minis for Black Powder and Clash of Kings.

I've been bitten by the nostalgia bug when Steve Jackson Games dropped
their Kickstarter for OGRE Miniatures, so I've been painting up some Paneuropean and Combine armor units, and completed a Mk III Ogre.

I still do 40K minis on occasion, but haven't played since after 5th
Edition dropped; I'm still partial to 4th Ed (with 2nd Ed rules for
    grenades and twin-linked weapons).

I got into Flames of War and Team Yankee.

Dug through the boxes of GW stuff and couldn't decide to try out AoS or not. Me being me I'd have to rebase them on round bases or I'd not be happy. Also not sure I'd want to play with older looking models either. Might do Skirmish or Path of Glory.

Killteam was interesting but not sure I want to do that either. Though digging out some Squat mini's and making something with them had me onto something.

Considered just staying historicals and doing something American Civil War, "Saga", or even "By fire and Sword"

Well aside from obviously playing video games I do enjoy Star Wars:

games like Doom, King Domino and such games.

I started a hobby blog too... some very long time ago.

I'm still tempted starting with Fallout: Wasteland Warfare or the new Battletech boxes...

Better forum than 99.9(repeating)% of the Internet. Even with bouts of homopyronecrobestiality, there's still more interesting conversation and civility here than a lot of the Internet. It's sad to see reddit kind of taking the place of Usenet, because
reddit's an absolute cesspool in places.

Also, nostalgia's a hell of a drug (maybe not as much as LSD, but certainly safer).

I host a weekly D&D session at my home for a few friends (that I'd met at the local GW store). I don't DM, we've got a guy who enjoys it and is good at it. Wrapped up a campaign earlier in the year, longest one I've ever been in. And now we're into
    another.

I've also been building up a collection of board and card games to play with folks. We've broken them out when some people couldn't make it for D&D (kids, Navy duty, stuff like that). My coworkers also seem to like the idea of "game days" so I might
host some of those in the future.

I got some of the Star Wars miniatures games, but don't know many people who play them, so they mostly sit on the shelf. At least the Armada ships (and the CR-90 for X-Wing, which was a Christmas gift from a friend) look cool on display.

I've got a crapload of GW figures to paint (and a lot to assemble, especially as I inherited whatever didn't get destroyed to fire when my dad passed), but I don't really play the games. Too many of the newer players at the local GW want to play "
hardcore" with beatstick lists rather than just have fun with fluff-based lists. Boring. GW's increasing prices don't help, and I don't want to deal with some jackass trying to tell me I can't use my old school Obliterators just because GW keeps making
the models larger and more expensive. If I have a classic Abaddon somewhere, I'd use it over paying $60 for a model I'd have to fix in places (like the fur cloak, because their stupid CAD design is shit for fur and hair). The rules for the games aren't
too bad, it's just that most of the players are meh and everything's getting expensive. The smaller scale stuff like Warhammer Underworlds isn't bad, though.

I should take some time to check the Outtakes, should be good for a laugh when I'm stressed. I probably have most of them saved in a file, but that doesn't bring out the same kind of nostalgia reading it online does.

I found a D&D group through playing GW games. All the people I've played D&D with over the past few years were folks I first played 40K and WFB with. Heck, even had the GW store's non-manager employee playing for a while, but it was hard for him to
show up to our Saturday sessions since he had to close down the store.

Good luck finding a group, man. It's a blast when you find a good one.

It's ok. Not bad. Not great. But decent. The (very) expensive box game doesn't come with the full rules and you can only get them by downloading a pdf right now.

Sadly, full rules is not the FFG way.

Not sure if counts as non-GW or not but I've just picked up a copy of "Talisman Revised 4th Edition" from a shop clearance for the princely sum of £26GBP which is about $33 USD.

Very happy.... and trying to avoid getting sucked into the expansions !

    Cheers

I think that counts. I haven't played anything for months since lockdown started.

The Oldhammer group I'm in kinda wants to get together on July 4th weekend for gaming but I'm not sure if I'll go. I'm really leaning in to the whole "social distance" thing.

They also want to try Oathmark as a stand-in for WFB 3rd.

I suspect Oathmark will be a very disappointing WFB 3e stand in, but Rick Priestly's Warlords of Erewhon is fun, and has a constantly updated selection of army lists https://thisgaminglife.uk/ .

The system is so flexible I've converted my Saga armies over in both historical and fantasy variants.
