• How to define a psychic power to defend while unaware?

From news@zzo38computer.org.invalid@21:1/5 to All on Fri Feb 21 22:07:06 2020
How to define a psychic power that enables attack and defense against a
sapient being that you are unaware of them as though as you are aware (but
with normal penalties for being unable to perceive them), with extra
penalties for range and Mind Shield?

What sorts of attacks and defences? Physical? Psionic? Something else?
Wouldn't it be easier to create a power to detect them?

Physical attacks and defenses. It might be easier to create a power to
detect them, except, I don't want it to detect them, and want it to work immediately, rather than being an active use. (If they do not attack me,
or I do not try to attack them, I have no idea there is anyone there, or
even if I do, don't know if they are hostile, so this does less than a
normal detection power, but is also better in that it works automatically.)

For example, if someone attacks me by surprise, and they have Mind Shield
1, I may still attempt to dodge, block, or parry at -5 (the usual -4, and
an additional -1 for Mind Shield). This means that I can defend as though
I am aware that I am being attacked, even though I am not. Of course, once
they actually do so, then that makes me aware, so further defenses are -4
only and not -5. If they instead secretly attack with an arrow, then there
are further penalties, due to range.

I can alter the above if something else ends up making more sense. It is
    just my idea for now.

Aha, having you become aware once you are attacked makes it simpler. This
means you can never be surprised, of course.

This is clearly based on Precognition [25], with One Event (attacks on me) -40%, Reliable +10 (since you don't want a roll for it to operate) +50%, Reflexive +40%, and Aspected (next turn only) -20%. That comes out to
    130% of 25, which is 33 points.

It doesn't get you the defence penalty for Mind Shield, but if you gave
it the power modifier Telepathy -10%, that brings the cost down to 30
points, and allows you the defence penalty as a special effect. It isn't
really worth any points, since it won't come up often.

Then you need a GM who'll let you take this. I;d be pretty dubious about
    it, personally.
