I'm pretty sure that was the version number. What I specifically
remember from this was that it was a linear dungeon, like Hack, but at
one point I ran into Larry, Curly, and Moe, who ran into the room
punching each other. I was playing it on my a computer at my dad's
workplace and I wasn't able to get back to it for various reasons.

I want to find Larry, Curly, and Moe again. I want to see them punching
    each other.

Searching the Internet provided this link: https://www.nethack.org/download/2.3e/
Larry, Curly, and Moe are part of it,
if the game gets compiled with the tag
    "STOOGES" defined.

    Nethack 2.3e I think, from 1988.

The source code is still availabel in a number of places eg:

    https://nethack.org/download/2.3e/

But I think you will need to compile it yourself. It's been decades
since I did that, and even then it was on a Sun workstation, so I'm not
at all sure how hard it would be to get this working.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Binary compare of nh23e.zip is
identical to the archive I have stored since its release.

Supersede because I forgot to add the checksums:

All nethack versions prior to 3.2.3 (which was a source-only release
made at the same time as source and binary releases for 3.3.0)
suffer from a Y2K bug in their scoreboard file ('record') handling.

Setting the system's clock back to 198x or 199x should avoid the
problem. Unfortunately really old versions decided whether a save
or bones file was compatible with the executable by comparing
their file modification timestamps so that may not be as trivial a
    workaround as it sounds.
