• YAAP Arbelf-Wiz-Gno-Fem-Neu, MR + Reflection-less NAO

From Joe Casserley@21:1/5 to All on Sat Aug 14 05:04:59 2021
Yet another self imposed conduct, a wizard who removed the starting cloak on level one and for the rest of the game never had magic resistance or reflection.

I've been trying this for a while, knew it was achievable when I got a Valk attempt as far as Orcus before losing out to his wand.

The early game was fairly non descript other than a wish from a smoky potion which gave me the Staff of Aesculapius; my weapon for the rest of the game. There was a magic lamp in Minetown, but I foolishly wished up a figurine of an Archon, and tried
applying it into the priest, so a wasted wish due to my typo. A bones pile in Minetown did give me quite a lot of scrolls, spellbooks and potions.

Sokoban was the amulet, which went into my bag for safe keeping. I had found a scroll of genocide, so went back to Minetown, locked myself in just the right sized room, stood on a scroll of scare monster and reverse genocided black dragons for the
    resistance and scales.

The quest was easy, and the Eye of the Aethiopica very handy. (Never worn for the MR, just carried). I found Fort Ludios and lost my first "oLS to a soldier with a wand of death.

Castle wand was at (0:1), so wishes were a BoH (hadn't found one yet), 2 x magic markers, ring of polymorph and figurine of an Archon. I equipped the Archon with the amulet from Sokoban, and Demonbane which I'd picked up somewhere.

I had three or so "oLS in play, so mapped out all the way down to the Vibrating Square. Then returned to my Sokoban stash, where I polymorphed into a cockatrice and laid a lot of eggs as instant death hand grenades - I didn't want to relay on wand/spell
of death, as the rebounds would get me! Also beefed up everything I could here, before setting off for Rodney.

2nd death came while clearing out the zoo in the tower, my Archon got confused and hit me with touch of death.

Got the the Sanctum, and killed the high priest. Yeenoghu appeared here which wasn't ideal! On the way back up, my Archon was somehow killed while out of my sight. Rodney hit me with a touch of death in the Valley for the 3rd death.

The Planes were fairly easy, the Astral plane was one of the hardest I've played. Was trying to avoid Death at all costs, but his ended up being the right altar so had to visit all three and kill all the Riders. The combination of attacks possible really
do hit hard when you don't have reflection or MR!

I don't know how to link to the ttyrec or logs, but it's the most recent game under the name arbelf on NAO

Umm ... I may be out of date with how the latest versions of the game work, but it used to be that just carrying the Eye gave magic resistance. (Wearing it just adds telepathy.)
