Bulgaria Expelled from FIDE, the World Chess Federation, Conditionally
    BAKU, AZERBAIJAN
    12 September 2016

In a shocking and apparently unprecedented development, Bulgaria has been expelled from FIDE, the World Chess Federation.
This action was based on a report by the FIDE Ethics Commission read into the record by Francois Strydom of the Republic of South Africa and Chairman of the FIDE Ethics Commission.
The basis of the expulsion was that the Bulgarian Chess Federation had imposed sanctions on S. Stiochkov and M Stoynev and Grandmaster Kiril Georgiev. These three individuals had appealed to the FIDE Ethics Commission and the FIDE Ethics had ordered the
    sanctions reversed and removed.
However, the Bulgarian Chess Federation had failed to comply with the ruling of the FIDE Ethics Commission and had stated that this was an internal matter over which FIDE has no jurisdiction.
Now, Bulgaria and its president S. Danielov have been given one month to comply with the ruling of the FIDE Ethics Commission. If it does not comply, the expulsion will take effect and will remain in effect permanently until it does comply.
This ruling is unrelated to another ruling which expelled the Bulgarian Chess Federation and its President S. Danielov for diverting One Million Dollars in funds of the Bulgarian Chess Federation to a Limited Liability Company in Delaware USA.
While these two expulsions remain in effect, all Bulgarian Chess Players will play under the FIDE Flag so their chess careers will not be affected by these resolutions.

Georgios Makropoulos FIDE Deputy President explained that there is no provision to suspend the membership of a FIDE member. FIDE must either expel the member or do nothing at all. So, in this case, FIDE was left with no choice but to expel Bulgaria. If
Bulgaria wants to get their membership back, they must reapply.
