Kosovo* admitted to membership in FIDE, the World Chess Federation
    BAKU, AZERBAIJAN
    11 September 2016
At a meeting of the FIDE General Assembly this afternoon, Kosovo* was admitted to membership. However, the resolution admitting to membership specified that an asterick * must be attached to the name of the country.
Kosovo declared independence on 17 February 2008. Since then, most of the member-countries of NATO and the EU have recognised Kosovo as independent. However, Russia and Serbia have not recognized Kosovo as independent and Kosovo is not yet a member of
    the United Nations.
At the debate before the FIDE General Assembly this afternoon, the representative of Kosovo argued vehemently that there should be no asterick * attached to the name of his country.
Serbia did not object to the membership of Kosovo* in FIDE as long as the asterick was there.
So, the resolution that passed said that the asterick would be retained in the list of members but that the reports of players in the rating lists and other tournament results would omit the asterick.
FIDE is the World Chess Federation. It has 187 Member Federations plus 6 more including Kosovo* admitted to membership today.
The FIDE General Assembly meeting will resume tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM
