I have just started playing chess again at chess.com. I want to get a
computer chess program. I need a computer program that makes natural
mistakes. My rating is about 1300 so I am far from a perfect player.
What is a good chess opponent that can be configured to make mistakes?

Actually that is a rather difficult question. All the modern computer
chess programs have concentrated on being world beating to the point
where even fairly high rated players find them all but invincible.

A few specialists can drive them into the ground by clever exploits.

ChessMaster isn't bad at doing weaker playing personas if you can live
with its other quirks and you can play against Fritz and the like with
fixed depth search or asymmetric time limits to give yourself a chance.

Fritz X or 11 can be had for under £10 on Amazon and once you have a
user interface there are many free engines available to download.

To improve your chess rating quickly you might benefit from finding an
old copy of TASC Chess trainer 2 (bit tetchy to run on newer Windows) or
the somewhat tougher (above your rating) CT Art 5.

I found v3 very useful for relearning tactics. Both of these will give
you a progress report and demonstrate various motifs and progressively
more advanced tactics with periodic tests and refreshers.

I just ordered Fritz 14 It says XP. It also says 64 bit version.

Assuming you have bought the same version as I have then it comes with
both 32bit and 64bit Fritz engines and GUI on the same DVD.

Which version installs depends on whether the OS is 64bit capable.
If you have the choice then the 64bit engine is faster.

Does that mean you have to have a special XP to get it to work?

I doubt that it will work properly on XP as it is optimised for Win8.1 >according to the sleeve notes although I run it on Win7 no problems.
Just checked again and it claims to be OK on XP sp3 and anything later.

After installation it is worth going and picking up any updates.
