• Is bgonline.org down for good?

From MK@21:1/5 to All on Thu Mar 2 14:53:54 2023
For the past couple of months, I tried now and then
to read some articles about XG's luck calculations,
general topics like equity based luck, luck-adjusted
    results, etc.

When I do a search, it displays a list of articles but
when I click one, I get a "can't reach this page" error.

They no longer support the server that is being run for BGO which means I have to reboot it for a chance at it working. I just rebooted it now so maybe try again? It's on my to do list to find someone to get it running again. It shouldn't be that
hard for someone who knows what they're doing but I'm not that person and that person seems harder to find than you'd think.

Thanks for caring about this but who are "they" and
"why" do they no longer support the server..?

I just rebooted it now so maybe try again?

Now I can't even access the search page. :(

I wish I could help, as I value the opinions of people
whom I consider outright stupid, since we can learn
something unexpectedly from anyone. Times and
technologies keep chenging and it may not make
sense to reactivate your site but its contents have
a great value even for people like me who mostly
pisses on what sick gamblers discuss about...

So how about hosting a mirror of your sites static
content as a read only archive?

I used to host dozens of sites as part of my business
and I still host a few after being retired. I surely have
the means to host a read only archive without any
commitments and assuming that there won't be any
security issues, etc. with doing it.

I doubt that storage and traffic requirements will be
any issue. I'll think about and look into it.... Feel free
to provide more info and advice on what would it
take to host a read only archive mirroe of your site.

I'm not able to get through either. It's partly because the site is
so unstable that I took the time to back up some of my favorite articles
    to my own website.

So how about hosting a mirror of your sites static
content as a read only archive?

The Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) would probably be happy to
host a static archive of BGOnline. In fact, it has already archived
    a few of the articles:

    https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.bgonline.org/forums/*

But it's a rather random subset of the articles. To archive the whole
thing, you'd probably have to contact the people who run the Wayback
Machine. Also, you'd need to get bgonline.org up and running first so
    that the content is accessible.

You may try rebooting it again. When a system is defective or working unexpectedly, sometimes a simple repetition does the trick, at least partially, by reversing the internal condition caused by the last reboot.

Stick, do try the method explained there.

I didn't know that they would host entire
sites but that would be great. There may
be other free site hosting offerers to do it
also but they may not be dependable and
    may inject advertising, etc.

Also, you'd need to get bgonline.org up and
running first so that the content is accessible.

I'm sure stick would have a complete backup
    of it, no?

I vaguely remember something about its BBS
    software being obsolete/abandoned. Could
    that be the problem?

As I said, I may be willing to host it read-only
but I can't spend time and effort to resurrect
the data if it doesn't already exists in some
    sort of common backup format.
