Of course, as a mere mortal, from my
standpoint, there are three trillion plays
that might be correct -- it's not a question
    (for me) of "both candidates".

I don't want three stuck behind your prime
so I will spring with the 6 21/15.
And now I think 9/5 offers fairly good containment.
The opponent needs a lot of luck to escape and we're
nicely prepared to attack on the next roll.
    21/15 9/5

Without looking at the diagram, I'm probably going to go with offense
    because that is my nature.

Now, looking at the diagram, making the four point seems more
"offensive" than the POH play. So I'll do that. Presumably the defensive
play is to leap out and either run to the eleven or safety one of the
    blots in X's outfield?

Might the hybrid escape and hit (21/15 6/2*) be better than either?
Won't be surprised if that's the bot play, but I'll just block and hope
    O crunches before she escapes.

I have more than two candidates so I don't know exactly what Stick means.
    I would think that a defensive play a) springs with 21/15 and b) doesn't
give the opponent a direct shot. And I would also think that non-defensive plays (by that definition) can be defined as being offensive (in true maths-defining style).
I also think it's rather likely that Stick is playing on words here. By "offensive",
he might mean [offends me by showing such poor backgammon play].
So Stick might be saying: The correct play is an offensive play and other
plays (whether offensive or defensive) offend him by being so inept.

X is running short of time and needs to use the 6 to leap O's

My variant this time changes the position more than most of my

    of his 4pt.

As for Stick's comment, I suspect he's pointing out that 21/15
is not a purely defensive play, but helps with the job of
    containing O's straggler.

I found my way to the wrong play, making the 4 point, by the esthetic appeal of making the prime.

By Robertie's (borrowed?) principle of do what's hardest first, you can find your way to leaping with the 6. There are plenty of rolls to make a semi-prime in follow up.
