I found a nice variant for this one; see below. I hit, but XG plays
safe. It seems that XG prefers to live with just two blots if that
is possible, but if X is going to leave three blots anyway (with 1s,
2s, and 6s to hit) then XG goes for the tempo hit.
Or as some analysts might say, in the variant, don't worry about
estimating gammons and just make the DMP play #simplegame; but in
this position, hitting obviously loses too many gammons.

Volunteering a direct shot when your opponent has a five-point board
might seem insane to some, but X's situation is pretty desperate, so
he is willing to take some risks. But there are two problems with
hitting here. The first is that it loses a lot of extra gammons if
X gets another checker sent back. The second is that even if O does
not hit back (or even dances), X will probably have trouble getting
over O's five-prime. While X's priming chances aren't great, they're
not negligible; many of O's rolls weaken her prime and increase X's
chances significantly.

X to play 42
X is way ahead in the race. If he hits, he leaves a lot of blots lying
around which will give O a chance to hit back and catch up in the race.
By this logic, X should just play safe with something like 10/4, right?
The trouble is that 10/4 leaves X totally stripped in the outfield, and
likely to leave blots under less favorable conditions next turn, or the
turn after that. By hitting now when O's position is still weak, he
gains some time to clear his outside points in relative safety.
In the variant, I have given O a much stronger forward position.

X has a solid phantom six-prime. And these kinds of positions that need 6-1 are mostly D/P in my experience. Hitting is definitely not even an alternative.

The subject line was sort of a trick question. Of course you don't hit
here. I posed the question that way so that the reader might not think
too hard about the choice between 13/9 6/5 and 13/8. The purpose of
13/9 6/5 is clear enough...if X can make a six-prime then he almost
clinches the game. The question is whether it's too risky to give O a
chance to turn the game around by hitting both blots. According to XG,
the risk is worth it. Even if O hits immediately with an ace, she still
has to escape her straggler with an ace followed by a 6 (unless she can
get X to break his five-prime with an awkward roll, which is not too
likely). See also the variant, where XG still favors leaving two blots
even when O has a double shot at the midpoint blot.

Does hitting win more gammons? Probably, but not very many.
Does it win more games? One weakness I have is being too worried about
getting hit and trapped on the ace point, and this may be one of those positions.
What tips it for me is that 14/6 or 14/8 6/4 leave the prime stripped
and stacked, making it more likely that X will be forced to leave a shot
while O escapes with tempo.
The first hitting play that came to mind was 8/2* 4/2, but I think
holding the prime is more important than covering the deuce point. For
X to really be in trouble O needs to hit and then X needs to enter with
an ace (about a 1/9 proposition) and even then it's not over.

I suspect if you give the opponent (a lot) more timing it will be correct to play the quiet 14/6. As is, it would take quite the sequence to be hit and the opponent win the counter priming option. (you need to enter quickly is the first big hurdle)

This one is a difficult judgment call IMO. Playing safe with 14/6
creates a somewhat inflexible position that may force X to leave a
blot later in more unfavorable circumstances, but 14/8 4/2* risks
getting a checker sent back and losing the priming battle. The
rollout below favors hitting, but as Stick remarked, if you improve
O's priming chances then XG favors the safe play (see variant).

Three point vs three point anchor game. I don't see a lot of those.
Seems like timing is the main issue here, X has it, O does not. In a
roll or three X will be able to leap out and own the outfield while O
either exposes a direct shot or crunches her board. So, the hit seems premature.
But with the strong board, I don't want to volunteer a shot. I guess
that leaves 6/1, which looks ugly, but seem like the best alternative.

Which play do you make at dmp? Is it super clear that that play is correct at dmp?

I didn't consider, or roll out, 6/1, which XGR+ says is a double
whopper. The alternative to hitting that I considered was 13/8,
which gives O six hitting rolls, and further stacks up on the
heavy 8pt. By contrast, in the variant below, 14/9 leaves only
four hitting rolls, and puts a spare on the 9pt.

If X is going to leave a shot, then making the bar point is going to
be better than hitting. The question is whether X should leave a shot
at all. Although 8/5 is a bit ugly, I'm still a little surprised that
XG volunteers a shot here. See the variant for comparison, where I have strengthened O's board and moved O's straggler back a pip.
