Kit Woolsey has a nice article on breaking anchor.

    https://www.bkgm.com/articles/GOL/Sep02/anchor.htm

Here, timing considerations might seem to suggest breaking anchor.
X is ahead in the pip count and if he doesn't break anchor now, he
has to dump a checker to the 2pt, and he might be forced to break
anchor under more unfavorable conditions next turn. Also, O's board,
while pretty strong, has a blot in it.

However, the rollout below says that 20/11 is a whopper. The thing
is that O's timing is also precarious. If X sits tight, O may very
well be forced to compromise her position immediately. If we give
O some more timing (see variant) then the decision becomes much
    closer.

Here we should not overlook the pretty aces awarded to O after 20/11. (Variant 2)
Also after 8/5, the spare checkers on the 4 and 5 work well together. If we move the spare checker on the point 4 to point 2, both moves are close. Therefore, the spare checker on the 4 point also have an effect on the decision. (variant 3)

Deciding whether to break anchor in a mutual holding game isn't
usually considered a "pay now or pay later" decision, but there
are some similarities. X can volunteer a direct shot now with
21/18 21/15, and will be in great shape if he is missed (probably
able to double). Or he can sit tight, cover a blot with 8/5 8/2,
and hope that he can cruise home to a win without ever leaving
    a shot.

According to the rollout, the decision isn't close. X's broken
five-prime is a great asset that he shouldn't discard lightly.
Unless O rolls her 44 joker or the hit-and-split 42, X will still
have an okay position even if he is hit, because O will still
have work to do to escape her back checkers.

X is behind in the race with the weaker board, which often means he
should sit tight. But the alternative is the ugly dumping play of
8/5 8/2, and running isn't *that* dangerous since O has only 4's and
10's to hit, and if she doesn't hit then X may get a shot himself.

If we move O's dead checker on her 2pt to her 9pt, however, then XG
    prefers the ugly dump.

I don't like dumping here but breaking anchor leaves too many shots for
my taste. 21/17 6/1 might be playable, but with 7s 8s 9s to hit in the
outfield and 2s 11s and 12s to hit loose it seems like a guaranteed trip
to the bar. what doesn't hit?

so, I'll dump. Clearing the bar looks a bit better than playing off the
    six so I'll do that.

Will X situation be better or worse after the next roll, when he dumps?

Dumping with 7/3 7/2 is essentially a "pay later" type of play. The
trouble is that things aren't likely to get better for X. He is very
likely to have to pay eventually, and killing those two checkers is a
    big sacrifice.

In the variant, paying now costs even more in terms of number of shots,
but XG still prefers to pay now.
