• RQFTCIWSSSG12 Game 5, Rounds 2-3: propaganda, self-portraits

    From Mark Brader@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jun 9 23:23:49 2022
    These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2012-06-05,
    and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
    by members of What She Said and/or of Smith & Guessin', but have
    been reformatted and may have been retyped and/or edited by me.
    I will reveal the correct answers in about 3 days.

    For further information, including an explanation of the """
    notation that may appear in these rounds, see my 2021-07-20
    companion posting on "Reposted Questions from the Canadian
    Inquisition (RQFTCI*)".

    * Game 5, Round 1 - Current Events (excerpt)

    Answer these 2012 questions if you like for fun, but for no points.

    1. This week the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority
    ruled against Mayor Ford. What did he want to do that the
    authority rejected?

    2. If the servings are more than 16 fl.oz. (475 ml), you won't
    be able to buy these in New York, according to a ban proposed
    by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Won't be able to buy what?

    * Game 5, Round 2 - History - Propaganda Posters

    We give you the number of a poster, and possibly a clue; you
    name the country it came from. Hint: the 18 posters come from
    18 different countries.

    I have rearranged the round in order of the 2-page handout:

    http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/5-2/posters.pdf

    There were 8 decoys on the handout, for which there no clues;
    skip over the decoys if you like, or name the countries for fun,
    but for no points.

    1. A modern day anti-US poster.
    2. (Decoy.)
    3. A modern-day anti-minaret poster.
    4. An anti-feminism, pro-hijab poster.
    5. (Decoy.)
    6. (Decoy.)
    7. An anti-Nazi poster.
    8. An anti-homosexual poster.
    9. This isn't a decoy, but there still is no clue for it.
    10. (Decoy.)
    11. An anti-EU poster.
    12. (Decoy.)
    13. A WW2 anti-British poster.
    14. (Decoy.)
    15. (Decoy.)
    16. A WW1 recruiting poster.
    17. (Decoy.)
    18. An anti-communist poster.

    * Game 5, Round 3 - Arts - Self-Portraits

    The handout shows self-portraits by some famous painters and
    photographers. Pleaase examine all three pages:

    http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/5-3/self.pdf

    1. The only Canadian in the round is #14. Whose self-portrait
    is this?

    2. Name the American-born photographer in #16. (Sorry, you're
    supposed to turn the paper to see it properly.)

    3. There are two self-portraits of Pablo Picasso. One is #8;
    which is the other one?

    4. There are two self-portraits of Salvador Dali. One is #13;
    which is the other?

    For questions #5-10, we name the artist and you give the picture
    number. All of these are very much in the style of their more
    famous works.

    5. Ansel Adams.
    6. Marc Chagall.
    7. Paul Cezanne.
    8. Peter Paul Rubens.
    9. Henri Rousseau.
    10. Edvard Munch.

    So there were 15 decoys. Decode the rot13 if you want to identify
    their self-portraits for fun, but for no points.

    11. Znel Pnffngg.
    12. Rqtne Qrtnf.
    13. Nyoerpug Qhere.

    22. Nagubal Ina Qlxr.
    23. Ivaprag Ina Tbtu.

    * Game 5, Round 1 - Current Events (excerpt)

    Answer these 2012 questions if you like for fun, but for no points.

    1. This week the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority
    ruled against Mayor Ford. What did he want to do that the
    authority rejected?

    Buy some parkland adjoining his home.

    2. If the servings are more than 16 fl.oz. (475 ml), you won't
    be able to buy these in New York, according to a ban proposed
    by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Won't be able to buy what?

    Soft drinks. Joshua and Dan Tilque got this.

    * Game 5, Round 2 - History - Propaganda Posters

    We give you the number of a poster, and possibly a clue; you
    name the country it came from. Hint: the 18 posters come from
    18 different countries.

    This was the second-easiest round in the original game, after
    current events.

    I have rearranged the round in order of the 2-page handout:

    http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/5-2/posters.pdf

    There were 8 decoys on the handout, for which there no clues;
    skip over the decoys if you like, or name the countries for fun,
    but for no points.

    1. A modern day anti-US poster.

    North Korea. (Note the Korean lettering.) 4 for everyone -- Joshua,
    Erland, Pete, Dan Blum, and Dan Tilque.

    2. (Decoy.)

    Japan. Joshua and Dan Tilque got this.

    The right-hand flag is apparently a form of this one:
    http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/i/it-1897m.gif
    which was Italy's flag at the time when Germany and Japan ere using
    the other flags shown.

    3. A modern-day anti-minaret poster.

    Switzerland. (Note the flag.) 4 for everyone.

    4. An anti-feminism, pro-hijab poster.

    Iran. 4 for Dan Blum.

    5. (Decoy.)

    Norway. Joshua, Erland, and Dan Tilque got this.

    During the German occupation, of course. Shows the Waffen SS and
    their friends the Norwegian Legion.

    6. (Decoy.)

    United States. Joshua and Dan Tilque got this.

    7. An anti-Nazi poster.

    Canada, duh. (I mean, the line *is* from the national anthem...)

    8. An anti-homosexual poster.

    Russia. As the poster cannot be obviously dated, I accepted USSR.
    4 for everyone.

    9. This isn't a decoy, but there still is no clue for it.

    Poland. (The Solidarity movement.) 4 for everyone.

    10. (Decoy.)

    Cuba. (Again, note the flag.) Joshua, Erland, and Dan Tilque
    got this.

    11. An anti-EU poster.

    Sweden. (Homage to Ingmar Bergman.) 4 for Erland.

    12. (Decoy.)

    The UK. Joshua and Dan Tilque got this.

    13. A WW2 anti-British poster.

    France. Meaning, of course, Vichy France. 4 for everyone.

    The text lists British conquests "Yesterday", "Today", and "Tomorrow?"

    14. (Decoy.)

    Germany. Joshua and Dan Tilque got this.

    The lettering is in German, but using a font reminiscent of Hebrew
    script. The map tucked under the man's arm, illustrating Jewish
    control of Germany, is rotated clockwise about 50° because that's
    how he happens to be holding it.

    15. (Decoy.)

    South Africa. Joshua and Dan Tilque got this.

    16. A WW1 recruiting poster.

    Australia. 4 for Erland, Pete, Dan Blum, and Dan Tilque.

    18. An anti-communist poster.

    The Philippines. (Note the map.) 4 for Joshua, Erland, Dan Blum,
    and Dan Tilque.

    Also it is the pre-WWII map of Germany and I think it has Austria, the Sudetenland, and Bohemia incorporated. Could be wrong about that though.

    Anyway, I remember spending way too much time trying to figure out what
    it was a map of, only to get it wrong. But it's a decoy and I don't
    think I'd spend all that much time on a decoy. I certainly wouldn't
    today. So I'm wondering if Mark changed which items were the decoys
    between the first time and this time.

    No, I didn't.
