    From Mark Brader@21:1/5 to All on Sat May 28 15:11:26 2022
    These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2012-05-14,
    and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
    by members of What She Said and/or of Smith & Guessin', but have
    been reformatted and may have been retyped and/or edited by me.

    ** Game 3, Round 10 - Challenge - Triple Threat

    * A. To Boldly Go Beyond Sci-Fi Trilogies

    A1. The last book in this Douglas Adams series was subtitled "The
    fifth book in the increasing inaccurately named Hitchhikers
    Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy". Name *either* the 4th or
    the 5th book.

    A2. The original books of this Hugo-winning "trilogy" were
    published from 1951 to 1953. Additions from 1982 to 1993,
    such as "<answer A2>'s Edge" and "Prelude to <answer A2>",
    pushed the total to 7 books. Name the series.

    * B. Three Fundamental Groups

    Many particles in physics are composed of fundamental particles.
    These fundamental particles are in turn classified into three
    groups, and those are what we're asking about here.

    B1. The fundamental particles that form matter fall into two
    types of fermions. Name either type.

    B2. The third group of fundamental particles are force carriers
    that are involved in the transition, conversion, and transfer
    of energy. They are not fermions; what are they?

    * C. Three? Now That's a Big Country

    Due to the direct possession of islands and/or dependent
    territories, some countries span multiple continents -- at
    least for suitable definitions of "continent".

    C1. The possession of the "Near Islands" in Asia (the largest
    being Attu) means that this country has direct territory
    in three continents. Name the country.

    C2. Although there is no agreement on the "continental" border,
    this country says that Curaçao and Aruba are in South
    America, and therefore it spans three continents. Name the
    country.

    * D. Captain Cook's Three Voyages

    D1. Name any one of the ships that James Cook captained on his
    three famous voyages.

    D2. During his third voyage Cook visited what is now British
    Columbia. What year was that, within 10?

    * E. Is Gemini about Twins or Triplets?

    E1. Name the comedian who in 2000 became the first person to
    have solo-hosted the Gemini awards three times. He had
    also co-hosted with Cathy Jones in 1998.

    E2. Name the comedy series that in 1998 became the first show
    to win a third award for Best Comedy Program or Series.

    * F. One-in-Three Chance out of Five

    F1. Only 5 boxers ever beat Muhammad Ali in a bout. Two were
    Joe Frazier and Larry Holmes. Name any one of the others.

    F2. The Green Bay Packers and the Miami Dolphins were the first
    two teams to win more than one Super Bowl. Name *any one
    of the next three* to do so. (City or team name.)

    Quarks; Mesons

    * C. Three? Now That's a Big Country

Name the
    country.

    Netherlands

    * D. Captain Cook's Three Voyages

    D1. Name any one of the ships that James Cook captained on his
    three famous voyages.

    D2. During his third voyage Cook visited what is now British
    Columbia. What year was that, within 10?

    1750; 1771

    * F. One-in-Three Chance out of Five

    F1. Only 5 boxers ever beat Muhammad Ali in a bout. Two were
    Joe Frazier and Larry Holmes. Name any one of the others.

    Leon Spinks

    F2. The Green Bay Packers and the Miami Dolphins were the first
    two teams to win more than one Super Bowl. Name *any one
    of the next three* to do so. (City or team name.)

    Pittsburgh

    Hearty congratulations!

    ** Game 3, Round 9 - Science - 6-10 Servings a Day

    We give a list of varieties; you name the fruit or vegetable
    group we are talking about. For example, if we said "Spartan,
    Honey Crisp, and Empire", the answer would be apple.

    1. Kabocha, Sweet Dumpling, Pattypan, Buttercup.

    Squash. 4 for Stephen and Dan Blum.

    2. Lemon, Kirby, English, Persian.

    Cucumber. 4 for Stephen and Dan Tilque.

    3. Orinoco, Red, Lady Finger, Sucrier, Cavendish, Mysore.

    Banana. 4 for Joshua and Stephen.

    The only bananas most of us have ever eaten are Cavendishes.
    These replaced the previous ubiquitous version, the Gros Michel, due
    to a fungal blight called Panama disease -- which is now threatening
    the long-term commercial viability of Cavendishes as well.

    4. Rock, Sour, Black, Fire, Japanese.

    Cherry. 4 for Joshua, Stephen, Dan Blum, Dan Tilque, and Pete.

    5. Damask, Victoria, Agen, Burbank, Stanley, Yellowgage, Serbian.

    Plum. 4 for Joshua, Stephen, and Dan Blum.

    6. Tommy Toe, Brandywine, Plum, Early Girl, First Lady.

    Tomato. 4 for Stephen and Pete.

    7. Santa Claus, Canary, Persian, Winter, Spanish.

    Melon. 4 for Stephen.

    8. Comice, Asian, Rocha, Red Bartlett.

    Pear. 4 for Joshua, Stephen, Dan Blum, Dan Tilque, and Pete.

    9. Aleppo, Cubanelle, Cherry, Banana Supreme.

    Pepper. 4 for Stephen.

    10. Lambs, Oak Leaf, Summer Crisp, Crisphead.

    Lettuce. 4 for Joshua, Stephen, Dan Blum, and Dan Tilque.

    ** Game 3, Round 10 - Challenge - Triple Threat

    * A. To Boldly Go Beyond Sci-Fi Trilogies

    A1. The last book in this Douglas Adams series was subtitled "The
    fifth book in the increasing inaccurately named Hitchhikers
    Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy". Name *either* the 4th or
    the 5th book.

    "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish", "Mostly Harmless".
    4 for Stephen, Dan Blum, and Dan Tilque. 3 for Joshua.

    A2. The original books of this Hugo-winning "trilogy" were
    published from 1951 to 1953. Additions from 1982 to 1993,
    such as "<answer A2>'s Edge" and "Prelude to <answer A2>",
    pushed the total to 7 books. Name the series.

    The "Foundation" series, which was further extended by other authors
    after Isaac Asimov's death. 4 for everyone -- Joshua, Stephen,
    Dan Blum, Erland, Dan Tilque, and Pete.

    The quotation marks around "trilogy" were justifiable even before
    publication of the 4th book. The three original books were really
    a collection of stories. The 8 original stories (4 shorts and
    4 novellas), first published from 1942 to 1950, were reidentified
    as parts; and a short prequel was added as an introductory part,
    conveniently forming three books of equal length.

    Incidentally, according to Asimov, he was completely surprised to win
    that Hugo award for Best All-Time Series. It was a special one-time
    award and he assumed it had obviously been created in order to honor
    "The Lord of the Rings". Which, also incidentally, is another
    "trilogy" that isn't really a trilogy; it's simply a single novel
    originally published in three volumes.

    * B. Three Fundamental Groups

    Many particles in physics are composed of fundamental particles.
    These fundamental particles are in turn classified into three
    groups, and those are what we're asking about here.

    B1. The fundamental particles that form matter fall into two
    types of fermions. Name either type.

    Leptons, quarks. 4 for Stephen (the hard way), Dan Blum,
    and Dan Tilque. 3 for Pete.

    B2. The third group of fundamental particles are force carriers
    that are involved in the transition, conversion, and transfer
    of energy. They are not fermions; what are they?

    Bosons. 4 for Stephen, Dan Blum, and Dan Tilque.

    * C. Three? Now That's a Big Country

    United States (also Oceania [Hawaii] and North America). Attu is
    in the Aleutian Islands, part of Alaska. 4 for Joshua, Stephen,
    Dan Blum, and Dan Tilque.

    C2. Although there is no agreement on the "continental" border,
    this country says that Curaçao and Aruba are in South
    America, and therefore it spans three continents. Name the
    country.

    Netherlands (also North America [St. Maarten] and Europe).
    4 for everyone.

    * D. Captain Cook's Three Voyages

    D1. Name any one of the ships that James Cook captained on his
    three famous voyages.

    HMS Endeavour (1st), HMS Resolution (2nd and 3rd). 4 for Stephen
    and Dan Tilque.

    The Discovery was a good guess, but it was the *other* ship on Cook's
    third voyage.

    D2. During his third voyage Cook visited what is now British
    Columbia. What year was that, within 10?

    1778 (accepting 1768-88). 4 for Joshua and Stephen. 2 for Pete.

    * E. Is Gemini about Twins or Triplets?

    E1. Name the comedian who in 2000 became the first person to
    have solo-hosted the Gemini awards three times. He had
    also co-hosted with Cathy Jones in 1998.

    Steve Smith. 4 for Stephen.

    E2. Name the comedy series that in 1998 became the first show
    to win a third award for Best Comedy Program or Series.

    "This Hour has 22 Minutes". 4 for Stephen.

    * F. One-in-Three Chance out of Five

    F1. Only 5 boxers ever beat Muhammad Ali in a bout. Two were
    Joe Frazier and Larry Holmes. Name any one of the others.

    Ken Norton (1973), Leon Spinks (1978), Trevor Berbick (1981).
    4 for Joshua, Stephen, and Pete.

    Frazier beat him in 1971, Holmes in 1980. Two entrants tried
    George Foreman. He and Ali fought only once, in 1974, and Ali won.

    F2. The Green Bay Packers and the Miami Dolphins were the first
    two teams to win more than one Super Bowl. Name *any one
    of the next three* to do so. (City or team name.)

    Pittsburgh Steelers (1976), Dallas Cowboys (1978), Oakland Raiders
    (1981). 4 for Joshua, Stephen, Dan Tilque, and Pete.

    Green Bay and Miami had their second wins in 1968 and 1974. 9 other
    teams have since had two or more wins: San Francisco, Washington,
    New York Giants, Denver, New England, Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts,
    Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City, and Tampa Bay.
