• QFTCI23 Game 6, Rounds 9-10: Olympics, challenge round

From Mark Brader@21:1/5 to All on Thu Dec 14 23:21:52 2023
These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2023-10-30,
    and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Usual Suspects and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2023-05-24
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
    (QFTCI*)".

I wrote one of these rounds.

    ** Game 6, Round 9 - Sports - The Olympics

    1. Canada's early dominance in hockey, or ice hockey as they call
it, at the Olympic games was interrupted in 1936 when what
    country won the gold medal?

    2. What athlete won gold in the discus in four consecutive Olympics?

    3. In the 1932 Olympics, both the Lake Placid and the Los Angeles
games, *what special privilege* was granted to Italian and French
    athletes?

    4. The 1976 Winter Olympics were held in Innsbruck after which
originally scheduled city withdrew as the host?

    5. The city originally scheduled for the 1940 Summer Olympics also
withdrew, and another host city was chosen before the games
were canceled outright. Name either city.

    6. In the 1952 gold-medal bout in heavyweight boxing, who was
disqualified for lack of effort? He hardly threw a punch
    during the fight.

    7. In 1968, in *what event* did Bob Beamon set a record that still
stands as an Olympic record, although no longer as a world
    record?

    8. Due to Australia's animal-quarantine laws, the 1956 equestrian
events were not held in Melbourne. In what *country* were
    they held?

    9. Who proudly boasted that his city's Olympic games could no more
have a deficit than a man could have a baby?

    10. New competitions of special interest to Canadians were
introduced in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics: one new sport
and one new event in an existing sport. Name *either*.

    ** Game 6, Round 10 - Challenge Round

    * A. History: The French Republic

A1. As we mentioned earlier, the first republic of France was
formed in 1792. Since then the government has reformed
its constitution so many times that it is now what number
    republic?

    A2. The <answer A1> Republic introduced a strong presidential
position in addition to a prime minister. Which leader
backed the constitutional change and became its first
    president?

    * B. Canadiana: Toronto Newspapers

B1. What's now called the "Toronto Star" was founded in 1894
as the "Evening Star". What was its full name from 1900
    to 1971?

B2. Also in 1971, the "Toronto Sun" began publication. Many of
its staff had previously worked for which other newspaper,
until it shut down two days earlier?

    * C. Geography: They're Number 2

C1. By area, the largest fresh-water lake in the world is
Lake Superior. Which one is number 2?

C2. Measuring by the hydrologically appropriate course and
including tributaries, the longest river in the world is
the Nile. Which one is number 2?

    * D. Science: One Million

D1. 1 million watts equals one of which unit?
D2. 1 million megawatts equals one of which unit?

    * E. Miscellaneous: Freight Train Cars

E1. One of these freight cars is effectively a plain, open-topped
rectangular bin on wheels. It is used for loads such as
gravel. Some versions require the load to be lifted out,
while others are designed with a tilting body to dump it
to one side. But, ignoring that distinction, name this
    type of car.

E2. These cars may also have an open top, but if used for
something like grain, they would have a roof with openings
to load the car. But, ignoring that distinction, their
special feature is that they unload through openings in
the floor, which has a funnel configuration to guide the
load into the openings. What is this type called?

    * F. Literature: Poetry

Name the poet who wrote each of the following selections.

F1. "Because I could not stop for Death --
    He kindly stopped for me".

F2. "Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherized upon a table".
