In the 60s the state of Israel still relied on an extended network of kibutzes (collective farms) which performed the role of an occupation and vigilance forces on the borders.
No way they could be stormed by surprise. No need to call reservists, as they were always immediately available on the ground.

Today most kibutzes are long gone, thanks to the capitalist development. Today's border people are basically trained to run & hide (to borrow someone's phrase) when the alarms go off. Bourgeois people rather than peasants/farmers.
These people don't need to seize the land, land is a gift from the government. They didn't have to endure the effort and pay the price.
The other side smelled that weakness, unpreparedness.

Watching News Mix I am able to watch CNN BBC Fox and MSNBC all at the
same time. At the moment, there is a "live" broadcast on all three of
the missing families speaking out. Most interesting is that only Fox is actually "live" and the other three are delayed a little ... not sure of
the reason and the delay is not too long, but interesting. MSNBC is the
only one that stopped the live broadcast and went back to their own
opinions. MSNBC has been the most unusual and more like what Paul is
saying. They seem to be blaming Israel a little and not the Hamas et al "group" that seem bound and determined to attempt to do "something" ...
it is not a good time. They are not very clear in placing blame.

My wife and I were in Israel last year and it was a lovely visit, but
there was a "warning" out from the State Department. Many, many years
ago, my former wife and daughter and son visited Israel and did
archeology work for Baylor ... time in Egypt Jordan too ... it was a
much better time. I was in the Air Force in 73 and wondered then why
what happened happened. I hope it comes to a conclusion soon ... hope
springs eternal.
