• At what age, or year, did you first buy/read Doyle's Super System?

From Paul Popinjay@21:1/5 to All on Sun May 14 21:37:06 2023
I guess I was about 25 or 26, which would be about 1980. Had to be before that, because the Bell Club had not yet opened.

    RIP Doyle

I never knew you were a resident at the Bell Club. Think I played at that Dive once and then it closed. I had the original silver hard copy of the Super System and read it early 90's I think. I remember liking the stories more than the strategy. I
probably read all the poker books available back then which weren't too many...even read Max Shapiro's poker essays. David Sklansky and Mike Caro got me thinking about poker differently and then I ordered Poker Probe from Caro which was THE hand
analysis software at the time. Took him a while to make it to the post office to mail it to me....but I used the hell out of it and charting out every imaginable simulation, graphing the results, seeing the power of various matchups. It was extremely
useful to me at the time. Also fun, was experimenting with Caro's book of poker tells and actually making some of that gimmick stuff work at the table.
Reminds me of a stupid story back in the day when they still had LoBall. I was at a table....all full of reg degens...after a hand, a couple guys started pushing a couple cards back and forth showing how close they were to a jackpot constructing a
wheel and a 6-4 by swapping cards. I jokingly yelled out "jackpot", but then the entire table...which maybe wasn't even paying attention to these two guys got into it thinking we had a real jackpot and THEY started screaming jackpot....Floor comes over
and security quickly gives them the word what happened and the Floor is telling the entire table we're all under arrest. Not sure what happened, but I was already standing up to leave and I walked off.

The Bell was all the way live when it opened. Gardena quickly felt the sucking up of their player base. The Monterey was first to go. Then Commerce got underway in '82. I remember it had been a Christmas Tree lot before they built the poker club.
100 tables, whereas Bell had had 70. By the way, the first Super System was Brown. After that they came out with the silver copy. I think I still have Poker Probe as a file on one of my computers. I'd have to look for it.

Can't really say when I first read "Super System" but I remember I got it at a used book sale.
However, I bought and read "Super System 2" as soon as it came out in 2005.

    R.I.P. Doyle.

You left out the Huntington Club, my dad played there, too before Commerce. I don't recall Bell having 70 tables, it sure as hell didn't have 70 games going the time I played....must have closed the following week. I think some old guy who owned it
    was there.

Me too, Mike. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Vividly remember going to Barnes and Nobles that night. First thing I read was Jennifer Harman.

Huntington Park Club, one of my favorite hangouts. Right next to Watts. One night I walked in and immediately saw them playing Pai Gow tiles in the back of the room. I asked someone, "What is that? What are they playing?" They told me it was Pai Gow.
I replied, "Oh. That will never catch on."

lol, I still remember being in Vegas...was a Halloween weekend I think.....ARod was sitting in Bobby Baldwin's room looking like somebody had just killed his dog and Jennifer Harman was in there bouncing around all Manic happ-like...so I immediately
knew who won and lost. There are two times I used to like going to vegas....when the Seniors were playing in the WSOP....great cash games around town and also Halloween weekend when girls dressed in the most flagrantly skimpy costumes would be
walking around the finer casinos in vegas.
It's a shame we don't hear about Andy Beal anymore. He was playing Harman and that group of friends(the corporation) who'd rotate against him HU. I heard at one point he had them pretty well beaten, which meant all of the vegas poker community was
beaten because word was everyone had money invested in it many levels deep. But, then they had a nice comeback against him. Not sure how they left things, but I suspect he funded some of their degeneracy for a few years.
