In this case they wanted to know where it was going. So they followed it and circled it with U2s to intercept radio transmissions to and from it. They learned it was heading for our missile silos in Nebraska, probably to get close up pictures for their
intercontinental missiles for targeting. (They know any incoming missile will have it GPS signals blocked and scrambled by us, so the missile will target with video recognition – they didn’t get).

They learned the balloon navigation was like the hobby balloons we fly in (or at least I have); It sensed the directions it was going and changed altitude (by pumping air into, for descending or venting air out of, for rising, the balloon) to find moving
air going in the direction they wanted. When it tried heading for our silos, we jammed the GOP signals so it couldn’t control it’s direction. It missed it’s targets. After losing its mission, we didn’t shoot it down because it endangered
populations and we knew it contained explosives. How?

Counterintelligence tradecraft. We incase our equipment with thermite packs and explosives. (Just like on the USS Pueblo – but no explosives). We knew that if we simply shot a hole in the balloon, allowing it to slowly descend, keeping the package
intact, it will still activate (by altitude trigger or attempting to open the package) the thermite packs to melt all frequency crystals, mother boards, and discs; then explode to spread all the melted stuff.

But by having our aircraft shoot a missile and hit the package direct, it would spread the equipment out and possibly not trigger the thermite or explosives. And by doing it over shallow water, we might capture some fragments of their equipment that will
tell us something.

The Republican Congressmen waving their hands and yelling about Biden (and sending out campaign contribution emails to you fools) know all this. At least the ones on the Intelligence Committees. So you Wingnut go ahead and kiss your GQP’s ass; but do
