• Final Lap 3 Accelerator 'slow' Problem

From Myles Meyer@21:1/5 to All on Tue Dec 6 16:45:12 2016
    Well shoot.

I have found 3 of these machines in the area and all of them have the same set up.

I will have to look more into this I guess.

    Thanks

I have a Final Lap 3 UpRight that very slowly increases in speed, checked the control and it is just a common no/nc mini switch.
But it has two resistors attached to its wires, and these are not in the schematic that I have. Also schematic shows 6 pin connection and I have a 4 pin connector.
So, I am wondering if anyone here has a set up like mine?

That is a hack to avoid using a potentiometer. The two resistors set the 'wiper' voltage, the plug is probably what they had lying around when
the original plug/socket got bunged beyond usefulness...

The problem was the nylon spur gear that turned the pot would break
sometimes and operators realized that most people drive these games with
the gas pressed hard down. They figured if folks just want the game on
full steam ahead then why have breakable parts (pot, gears) replaced on failure. So the gas then became either off or full on when pressed.

I have the pots #19-9026 and may still have the gears 040249-01. If you
have the manual it shows the gas pedal assembly on page 4-10.

This is so strange as on page 15 of this schematic http://ohwow-arcade.com/Assets/Game_Manuals/FINAL%20LAP3.PDF it shows that the gas pedal has a microswitch on it.

    Hi Myles,

Page 2-1 shows a pot for the accelerator. It would appear the the game
may have come with either a pot or the Happ switch style accelerator pedal.

If yours looks like the Happ one, then I can only think that the
resistors were added there to try and slow the car speed down by not
allowing a maximum voltage to the ACCEL input. Perhaps the game was too
easy with just the straight switch?

So to close this out. Seems very strange but I just replaced the switch and the acc. pedal works just fine.

I still don't understand how resistance would slowly go down with a bad switch. ;-)

Just glad it is up and running again.
