• New magazine on fermentation, also new sourdough online group

From Donald@21:1/5 to All on Mon Mar 16 09:23:32 2020
I ran across a new magazine on fermentation and there have been some
articles on sourdough bread making in it. I emailed the company
(same one that produces Mother Earth News) to request a sample issue
and got one. The card in the mail I got was one of those that gets you
a free issue but if you don't cancel, you pay the annual price and the
    issue isn't really free.

After reading the first issue, I called to subscribe instead of doing
that online and asked if there were any special offers. They had (and
may still have) a 1/2 price one year subscription offer for $20
instead of $40 (I'm rounding up a few cents).

There are a few articles on brewing beer and ginger ale (from scratch,
not a concentrated flavoring). One on making wines from weeds (like
dandelion), kumbacha, kimchi, vinegar, and others.

    The web site is here:

    https://www.myfermentation.com/

My reasoning with them when requesting a free sample copy was that I
am not good at canceling things and might forget to cancel if I wasn't satisfied with the sample issue. A week later they contacted me and
said that while that's not how they normally do it, they would send me
    a sample issue.

When I called to subscribe, I got the 4 issues (quarterly, but not
necessarily mailed 3 months apart) for $20 after asking about special
    offers and discounts.

I'm not sure yet if I'll continue beyond the first year and will wait
to see what the other two issues cover before deciding. It's mostly
articles and only a little advertising (at this point). But they cover
things well enough to dip your toes into new fermented food and
    beverage making.

Whether it ends up delving into much more about making beer time will
tell. If you want to not miss any issue since they started, ask about
getting a free sample issue of their premier issue, then when you
subscribe, ask to start it with the issue after that. Some articles
are in two parts, spread across two issues, so this way you won't miss
anything you might be interested in.

There's even some free online articles available on the web site
    above.

One other thing for those who aren't aware of it, I created a group on groups.io for sourdough discussions. It's not always very active but
comes to life when someone asks a question.

    https://sourdough.groups.io/g/main

You can subscribe by email but I suggest creating a groups.io account
first so you have access to the old Yahoo archive I uploaded in a
subgroup for the main group. You have to be a member of the main group
to join the subgroup. You can't post in the subgroup since it's only
for the message archive but you can start a new discussion in the main
    group.

If you still want to subscribe by email, send a message to:

I found the first issue at a local supermarket and picked it
up. Considered subbing but felt the cost too high. Never occured to me
to call asking for special offers.

Considered doing that for my old playboy sub (which I cancelled after
twenty years) but opted not too since the mag went woke and include
images of people that aren't particularly savory for my taste.

Anyway, thanks for the idea. How were the other issues? Did you renew?
