• It's Gardening Season in Texas

From Sqwertz@21:1/5 to All on Fri Feb 23 01:21:18 2024
I've tried to start 4 little pots of lemongrass from seed 3 weeks
ago but I'm not sure this is gonna work. Nada thing yet. Seeds
    bought from Amazon, fuckers.

I just started Gen 3 Take 2 (G3T2) of the Sqwertz Piss Peppers on
the window sil and they may take 2-3 weeks to hatch. If they do
at all. G2T1 took a while t sprout and then they drowned last
    year.

And I'm just staking the fence in the front yard. 490cm x 390cm x
310cm x 280cm (Its all the fencing I had) for Sweet 100 cherries
(probably trellised), Roma, Better Boy(?), and Cherokee Purple (so
far). My neighbor is giving me half her garden space, too, which
    is double mine.

And Harry, the cacti, was 2 feet wide before the freeze hit last
month. I thought for sure he'd survive, but <shrug>. But I got
some nubs off of him 3 months ago though. Son of Harry (Gen 2)
    will thrive!

Storebought culinary basil hasn't rooted, though in 3 weeks of
water. Last time I buy organic, those assholes!

Ouch. Pictures sucked. More in a few days.... you know it!

I'm curious, to me it seems like ordering stuff online and having it
shipped home as suffered an enormous decrease in quality the last couple
    of years.

Was this a one off, or have you experienced that online service and
shipping has gotten worse over time?

Beats me. This the first time I've tried to start anything
from seed that I hadn't grown myself the previous year.
Last year UI just used store-bought stalks and rooted them
myself. But it wasn't until late in the season.

This year, I bought these on Feb 5th. I see the ratings have
    tanked since then.

Or his customers don't. The best way to propagate raspberries is by
rooting some canes. I wonder if those 1100 mixed fruit seeds are all
jumbled up in one envelope. At least a person could distinguish the
    cherry "seeds" from the others.

    Oh, and there's this:

Apple seeds? Only if you want to use them for hard cider.

That Lemongrass can get five feet tall, Stevie, you won't
be able to see over it.

    <jus' sayin>

That's true. We once bought a scrawny lemon grass plant, reduced in
price because it looked like it was dying. We planted it here in the
subtropics and it became the size of a kitchen table and double the
    height.

Good luck with the "lemon grass". Each time I've bought what purports
to be lemon grass seed, it has turned out to be a much thinner and
fiberous plant than what you get from starting plants from the
culinary lemon grass from your local Asian market. The seed stuff
never gets thick enough at the base to make the more tender inner
leaves for cooking. Searching confirms two related species from Asia,
one more suitable for cooking and the other for mosquito repellant.

Beats me. This the first time I've tried to start anything
from seed that I hadn't grown myself the previous year.
Last year UI just used store-bought stalks and rooted them
myself. But it wasn't until late in the season.

This year, I bought these on Feb 5th. I see the ratings have
    tanked since then.

    They were these, BTW.

My review should show up in a day or two. Apparently all
lemongrass seeds rate pretty low on Amazon.

I don't think that seller knows very much about plants.

They certainly don't know math.  I can't vouch for any of
the rest, but that's what I saw immediately from your link.

That Lemongrass can get five feet tall, Stevie, you won't
be able to see over it.

    <jus' sayin>

Not a problem. He can buy a stepladder at home depot.

A step stool might get him past five feet.

No bueno. Squirtz would sue them for sure.

Good luck with the "lemon grass". Each time I've bought what purports
to be lemon grass seed, it has turned out to be a much thinner and

culinary lemon grass from your local Asian market. The seed stuff
never gets thick enough at the base to make the more tender inner
leaves for cooking. Searching confirms two related species from Asia,
one more suitable for cooking and the other for mosquito repellant.

I was just looking at buying more seeds from Amazon or even
plants delivered from Home Depot, and many of their reviews
    say the same thing:

"This Ain't Lemongrass". And, "Smells like lemon tastes
like grass" as one reviewer put it.

You can even tell from some of the pictures that it's not
culinary lemongrass just from the frond density and the wide
base rather than round-ish, knobular purple bases.

I'm just gonna sneak into MT Supermarket next week and grab
some mam nem and lemongrass stalks. The criminal trespass
has expired but I still have a civil agreement never to go
there again. Fuck 'em. They can sue me for violating the
agreement and they can claim their damages will be, "He
    tried to buy groceries!!!". Heh.

I spent about $8 on those last three stalks from 99 Ranch
    99. They rooted in water and grew good, but pretty
expensive. And I was late planting them.

Still not out of the question... If I get kicked out of MT
Supermarket, 99 Ranch 99 is only 5 bus stops away on my way
back home anyway (on the 801).

I've had a lot of failures with plants.

    I stooped trying that.

Well, whatever you do, stoop, but don't bend over while you're working in kuth's garden. Or you could get nailed.
