My trash day is Monday, but it being a holiday, none of that either nor today. Checking their website, trash won't be picked up until my regular
day next week. Same applies for the recycling truck.

My local trash service picked up on Monday, 1/15, despite the holiday.
I didn't really expect them to but I didn't get an email saying they
wouldn't. That's one thing I like about them. Unlike the big companies
they don't take holidays off. Oh, they did send an email saying they
wouldn't be picking up on Monday December 25th and Monday on New Years
Day. No biggie, those are the only holidays they didn't pick up on a
    holiday in years.

About 10 days ago I made an appointment for an A1C test for my doctor
for Wednesday, the 17ᵀᴴ, for 11:00 a.m. I've had an appointment for a year on the same date for my ophthalmologist at 1:30 p.m. Guess who
called awhile ago and wanted to know if I could come in at 11:00 a.m. instead?? Thankfully, I was able to go online and change that lab appointment to an earlier time on such short notice.

    That's good.

Main thoroughfares are clear here and my neighbor has cleaned off my
back steps. He also said he'd run up down the alley in his pickup truck
to make a path for me to walk to my car Wednesday morning. 30° is the predicted high for tomorrow and another sunny day.

Sorry to hear about the snow and ice but it's good you were able to
change your appointments and your neighbor is helpful.

No snow is expected here but the temps are supposed to be in the 20's
overnight tonight (1/16/24) so when I got home from work I turned on the outdoor spigots to drip so the pipes leading into the house won't freeze.

Here, they pick up on any day of the year, regardless. And if weather

don't wait a week. Garbos FTW!

For years, I forgot to drip both a hot and cold water pipe during below
    32°F weather. Luckily, nothing happened.

Seems you proved it isn't necessary. Hot water pipes are usually
    within the conditioned envelope.

No, because I don't actually know if it reached below 32°F there or not.

32 outside won't freeze your pipes inside. You should get a
thermometer and then you can tell what temperature it is. This stuff
is not hard. All the places that tell huge populations to just drip
the water are stupid. If you have vulnerable areas get heat tape,
insulation etc. If your utilities go out that's a whole different
story. I have water bottles in my uninsulated garage with no heat and
10 or 15 degrees for a week only produces a little ice sludge in the
bottles. Dripping should be a last resort not first line of defense.

True. Depends also on inside temperature because
copper is the 3rd best heat conductor and has ample
house heat to keep contained water above freezing.

    You should get a thermometer

This would be the most accurate, but once it says
frozen, damage may already have been done.

    This stuff is not hard.

True. To determine how much water has been frozen within the pipe
only requires a four-dimensional integration. Using cylindrical
coordinates might make the math easier, depending on how comfortable
    you are with trigonometry.

If you have vulnerable areas get heat tape, insulation etc.

You can also just put a trickle current through the pipe,
but best speak to an EE for the required power.

Perhaps you can ask JK before he leaves us next month.

I think he relies on friction to keep his thinks from freezing.
