Evidently horseflies find it difficult to land on striped coats. They
are attracted from a distance (they can't resolve the stripes from far
away) but when they get close they get often confused, crash into the
animal, and thus don't land and bite. Thus you will see about as many
flies around your quarter horse as around your zebra but the zebra will
get bitten less often (evidently a *lot* less often).
