I didn't think it was possible, but my Gelding turned into a Stallion. I
dont see any testicles, but he is mounting the mares. What do I do now?
It's possible that he has a retained testicle (one that never descended
from inside the abdomen into the scrotum). Ask your vet about it. Does
he actually get a full erection and penetrate, or just mount? Geldings
that engage in mounting behavior are not rare: I've had several.
I have a Shetland pony gelding. No retained testicles (the vet checked).
I have had him nearly 25 years, he is around 30, so he's not quite as
"active" as he used to be. But he used to always mount mares. I will
never forget the one time he mounted a Belgian/Paint cross mare. (Big
mare). I dont know how he managed to do it, but he got his whole body up
on the back of that mare.
Now, seeing a pony riding on the back of a large horse was beyond
hysterical, but it got better. She took off in a gallop, then she
bucked. He became a flying pony (yes, pegasys is real) :)
I saw the whole thing. When he hit the ground, I was worried he was
hurt, but he got up, shook off the dust, and went over to the hay rack.
(I think he was embarrased).
I'd probably be a millionaire today, if I had gotten that on video....
He did not seem to mount mares as much after that incident, and I dont
think he ever mounted "that" mare again.
But he did still occasionally mount my own riding horse. He and she were together almost their whole lives. She was a 14hand Arabian mare. When I
bought her at a ranch, I saw him and bought him too. They loved each
other, and she never seemed to mind when he mounted her
Note: The mares dont seem to mind...
Some mare owners object because they worry about infections.
