Windows XP Coccinelle: A Modular Update Kit for Windows XP
Windows XP Coccinelle was a project that aimed to provide a modular update kit for all French editions of Windows XP, with or without Service Pack. The kit was based on a program called cocci-kit, which was responsible for updating the user's own edition
of Windows XP from an ISO image. The goal was to save time during the reinstallation of the OS.

The cocci-kit worked with modules that could be updated. A module was composed of a set of files encapsulated in an archive. There were 36 modules (+ 1 special) that covered different types of updates that could be done on Windows XP. These modules were
all hosted on the XP Coccinelle file server and although different, they formed a whole that made the XP Coccinelle recipe. None of the modules were encrypted, and the scripts were simple batch files. It was also possible to create one's own module.

But XP Coccinelle was also a community of computer enthusiasts who loved Windows XP, gathered from October 2005 to 2011 around a forum that had peaked at nearly 30,000 members, the "coccinautes". However, life events and the shift from XP to Windows 7
forced me to rethink my priorities, even though I never forgot this little family. Despite everything, a few years later, precisely on April 26, 2015, some nostalgic people came back to me and suggested the idea of a Windows Coccinelle focused on Windows
7. On October 3 of the same year, under pressure from these fans, I decided to start over and launch the 7Cocci project, the natural evolution of XP Coccinelle. But the motivation was no longer there and the project never came to fruition.

Some of the features that made Windows XP Coccinelle attractive were:


The integration of Service Pack 3 and all the security updates available at the time of the module creation.
The installation of drivers for common hardware devices, such as graphics cards, sound cards, network cards, printers, scanners, webcams, etc.
The customization of the appearance and functionality of Windows XP, such as changing the boot screen, the logon screen, the wallpaper, the icons, the sounds, etc.
The addition of useful tools and applications, such as antivirus, firewall, registry cleaner, disk defragmenter, file manager, media player, web browser, email client, etc.
The removal of unwanted components and services that could slow down or compromise the system, such as Windows Messenger, Windows Media Player 11, Windows Search 4.0, etc.

Windows XP Coccinelle also offered some options to tweak and optimize the system settings, such as disabling unnecessary services, enabling faster startup and shutdown, improving network performance, etc. The user could choose which modules to apply and
which ones to skip during the update process. The result was a faster, more secure and more personalized version of Windows XP.
