• killdeer eggs hatched today

caught it part way through the hatch so i could
get a few pictures and then a bit later said hello
and talked to the babies for a few minutes and then
left them alone the rest of the day.

they'll be up and running around quickly.

i'm not sure when the birds out back will be
hatching, a different set of parents inside the
garden fence. more protected but i'm surprised
the pair out front managed to get theirs hatched
without trouble. normally raccoons raid them.
now i just hope they can keep a few alive. i
think they must have a pretty high failure rate
because they run around in the road a lot and
there's a lot of other hazards around too
including a hungry red-tailed hawk (i think it
is) that has been catching birds here this year
and eating them. we've not had this happen
    here before.
