I caught a few tufted titmice literally pulling stuffing from the patio
chair cushions. The holes in the fabric weren't there a couple of days
ago and don't look like the work of squirrels or anything with teeth has
been chewing on them. Not that it matters. I spotted the titmice
pulling the synthetic fluff from the cushion.

I stashed the cushions in the garage. All the birds (squirrels and
other critters, too) have plenty of natural materials with which to line
their nests this time of year. It's not cold here. Not even chilly.
The birds aren't entitled to de-fluff my patio chair cushions. :)

I can't think of any birds that would be using nests at this time of
    year.

That doesn't explain their fascination with your chair cushions
though. No idea on that one ... maybe someone else will know.

They have to sleep somewhere, don't they? Doesn't mean they're laying eggs.

    Maybe so. :)

Birds don't use nests for sleeping, only for raising young. Most of
them sleep in trees or brush.
