I was sitting on my front porch a couple of nights ago around dusk and >suddenly a group of about 5 critters emerged from the woods beside my
house and marched single file across the road to some more woods in
front of my house.
They seemed to be raccoons -- certainly not squirrels or rabbits -- but
I didn't seem to be able to pick out any of a raccoon's distinctive
striped markings. Although as I said it was getting dark.
Any ideas what it could have been? I didn't know raccoons would march
single file in a pack like that.

May have been Momma with kids in tow. They stick together for awhile,
not sure exactly how long and I'm sure even that varies...
They have an odd way of walking though. If something seemed a bit off
that would be another clue to it being raccoons ;-)

Yeah now that you mention it they did walk kind of weird. Kind of a
cross between walking and hopping.

...and where there are raccoons, you will find possums. I have a trio
of possums visiting my yard nightly, and they raid one particular bird
feed table.
