much where we used to live, but where we now live, Oceanside, CA,
there are no flat roads. It has been a very long time since I had to
fix a rear tire flat on this bike, and I had a really hard time
getting the tire off the rim. So, I went to the nearest bike shop.
This is not the sort of bike shop I wanted to go to. Lots of ebikes
and no major brands for tires or tubes. I found a tire the right
size, 26 x1.5" and bought it. The brand was CST. I was looking for
Specialized or Bontrager, but they didn't have any and the main guy
there said that Specialized does not make tires. Huh? I have used
Specialized Snake Skin tires on my road bike. What do you mean
Specialized doesn't make tires. He claimed that all the Specialized
tires are made by someone else and then labeled Specialized.
Really???? I wanted to get a new tire and so I bougth a CST tire.
I've never heard of CST. I haven't used it yet--I couldn't get it
completely on the rim, but I wonder if I should take it back. I
don't want to spend $40.00 on some Chinese off-brand. I also wanted
a tube from a known company. I guess I should have left because I
ended up with an Ultracycle tube. Should I try to get my money back
becuase this is cheap junk, or do you think it will be okay? Any
tips for getting the last few inches of one side of a tire on to the
rim? I've never had a tire resist me so much.Thanks.,
'Specialized' product, I don't know that but CST does a huge
volume for other labels. To clarify, Specialized does not
make tires. They started with Mituboshi Japan 45 years ago,
but now source many tire vendors.
Back to the technical side, 26-inch decimal series is known
for easy tire mounting generally (there are indeed
exceptions!). In my experience the rim liner is your
biggest variable, rim brand/model second and tires least
likely to vary as much from one to another.
If it's a solid section rim (nipples stick up inside) use a
rubber liner which is not so wide as to occlude the tire
seating ledges on either side. Overly thick, doubled or
overly wide rubber rim liners make tire mounting quite painful.
If it's a hollow section rim, use a fabric liner, as thin as
you can find, which fully covers the nipple wells. Often
previous problems have led someone to layer up various tapes
until tire mounting is difficult.
Then again, if none of those problems are seen, some rims
are just badly designed with insufficient difference between
tire seat and center section depths. Live with it or buy a
wheel.
Or certainly try another tire, they are not all that expensive. A

Thanks, Andrew. I went to a better bike store, one for serious
cyclists. A mechanic there managed to get my tire on all the way. I
found that the label said "559", not "599." I guess that means it
isn't right for my rim. THe next time I have to fix a flat on my rear
wheel, I'll buy a new tire and tube No more trips to Omega BIkes in
OCeanside. The peopelp at Trek North County were much better, as I
expected they would be. I would have gone there first, but it was
closing time and they were 20-30 minutes away. I could buy a new tire
now to keep one on hand, but the last time I had spare MTB tires, they
grew brittle and unusuable.
Thanks
Ken
All's well that ends well but the "599" number was a typo. There is no
such size. Next closest thing, an EA-1 597, would leave room for your entire hand between tire and rim and room to spare.
Did you ask second tech why the tire mounting was difficult for you? Something not optimized (rim liner? too wide a tube?) or your technique?
or a truly undersize (unlikely) tire?
