A beloved teacher was fatally struck by a bicyclist in Chinatown
earlier this month, police said — as they released new surveillance
footage showing the apparent hit-and-run rider.
Priscilla Loke, 69, was standing in the crosswalk at the corner of
Grand and Chrystie Streets around 10:30 a.m. Sept. 5 when the
cyclist rammed into her, cops said.
Loke — the Deputy Director of the Chinatown Head Start preschool
program – was thrown to the ground and suffered severe head trauma,
police said.
She was brought to Bellevue Hospital, where she succumbed to her
injuries two days later, authorities said.
The surveillance video, released late Monday, shows the suspect
walking on the sidewalk, wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt,
carrying a light blue shoulder bag.
Footage previously obtained by WABC captured the moment he slammed
into Loke head-on while heading north on Chrystie Street.
It also shows the cyclist walking up to a police cruiser and
speaking to the cops who responded to the crash – but he then got
back on his bike and bolted once the officers approached the victim.
Loke’s loved ones have sent a letter to the NYPD in search for
answers about how or why the suspect was able to get away after the
incident, according to WABC.
The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment from
The Post Tuesday.
Loke, who helped to run the Head Start center for more than 30
years, looked forward to retirement, WABC reported.
While she didn’t have children of her own, she cared deeply for her grandnieces and nephews.
“If only the cyclist had been more responsible,” Loke’s nephew, Weng Wai Ho, told WPIX.
“This wouldn’t have happened.”

you made all these bike lanes, yet no one uses them ! no tags,
licences, insurance, or even a written & driving test to qualify
the use on these "Vehicles" that are sadly taking lives. no recourse
what so ever if you ride on the sidewalks or not in the bike lanes
organized for these things.

Sadly this is ALL too true! Unused bike lanes are a joke ... adding
to traffic congestion. Blame the lame city council ... too busy
deciding what statues to tear down.

Bicycle or electric bike? Now they are strapping milk crates with
blaring sound systems on the back-pedestrians don’t stand a chance. Impossible to safely cross a street while these “drivers” are
totally distracted and are free to ignore every traffic signal. NYPD
should stop wasting time “educating” pedestrians on safety and go
after the real problem.

More bike lanes = less lanes for emergency service vehicles = delays
in emergency response times. EMT and paramedics are not coming to
you via bicycle. When you take away lanes ambulances and police get
stuck behind cars and now we have increased response times.
