• vario sound on LX7007

From Moshe Braner@21:1/5 to All on Mon Aug 15 21:34:11 2022
I bought an old LX7007 and when testing it in a car I heard "normal"
beeps. Now we have it installed in a glider, and when flying it makes a continuous tone, with the pitch varying with the lift. Sounds like an
old fashioned police siren. Very annoying. (Its vario needle and
digital average go up and down as expected.) I've looked through the
manual and the settings, and although I see the settings for the audio frequency range and other parameters, I cannot find a way to set it to intermittent beeps rather than a continuous tone. Can anybody tell me
    how to do that?

After the install in the glider, are you sure the vario is still giving you indications for thermal mode and not cruise mode?

It sounds like what you are hearing is the audio for the cruise mode.

There is a visual indication on the computer display as to which mode it
is in. And we also have a toggle switch so we can choose which mode we
want (or "auto"). So no that's not the issue.

We've found out that in the audio settings "linear" means continuous
tone and "digital" means beeps. Or so it seems via the "demo" feature,
we haven't had a chance to fly it again since changing that setting.

I'm sure that's it. I have the same vario in a glider I have a partnership in. I seem to remember the settings you describe.

Once you start using it, I'd like to see if you have any input on how to update the airport database.

AFAICT, there is no way (now that the product it no longer supported)
to update the airport database with current data. But, it is easy to
update your waypoints. So you can enter new airports (or airports with modified info) as waypoints. The problem is that if an airport no
longer exists, there is no way to ensure you won't choose it from the
airports database as a place to land. Personally, since my waypoints
file includes all the usable airports in my usual flying area, I'd
ignore the airports page, and only use the waypoints page. And if
flying in some other area, obtain a good waypoints file for that area,
that includes the usable airports. That is what I do when using Tophat
(a derivative of XCsoar), which is my preferred nav aid, but has no
    separate "airports database".
