The latest updates to Thunderbird are such that unread threads are still shown.  So, I selected all 1,165 of them and pressed the delete key.
Let's see if they come back or if I get a pleasantly sparse display.

Looks like I'll need to do a daily delete of all threads...

Be nice and raise a bug report for Thunderbird so they know they screwed
    up and should fix it.

I'm using 91.8.1 (64-bit).  I would install the latest or reinstall the current, but I'm afraid of losing my email history.  Suggestions?

You can update or do a new install without losing the mail history.
I've moved across computers and even different operating systems.

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish though. All threads start out
as unread, so if you don't see them, you'll quickly run out of things to
    read.

Visibility of threads is controlled at Settings/View/Threads.
