You can update or do a new install without losing the mail history.
I've moved across computers and even different operating systems.
Not sure what you're trying to accomplish though. All threads start out
as unread, so if you don't see them, you'll quickly run out of things to
read.
Visibility of threads is controlled at Settings/View/Threads.
