I don't seem to be able to get an account on eternal-september.

I do the registration thing but never get any error messages or an email with my info.

I confess I don't have much patience with what appear to be unhelpful things.

I'll just stay with Safari. It is working even though all the junk stuff is anoying.

Hmm.. I tried the registration page, and any use with a gmail email address did nothing.
It must have worked at one time, that's how my account is set up.

I tried registering again with my ISP email address (not an anonymous email like google gmail and the like.)
    Worked fine.

Do you have another email address you can use to register with ES?
It doesn't really matter when using the news server - just for "userid/pw" when thunderbird logs in to the news server.
(The "userid" does not need to be the same as your registered email address and probably shouldn't be.)

I thought the email address you register with also appears as the "From" address when you post to the newsgroup (as I am doing here)? I
registered with my gmail address, but set up Thunderbird to use the outgoing-email (SMTP) server of my "real" email address which is not on
gmail. As it turns out, if I try and send a private reply to somebody
here on RAS, and if that person's e-address is on gmail, then my email
service SMTP server refuses to send it, since they can tell that my
"From" address does not belong to that service. Only for gmail
destinations, claiming gmail is what's refusing this "unverified" email.
Strange. Even stranger, the "cannot send this" auto-reply ends up at
    my gmail address!

I've noticed that a recent "upgrade" to Thunderbird has made it annoying
to read threads. It used to display all replies in cascade fashion but
I can't seem to make it look that way any more. A double click on a
thread opens all replies simultaneously which then requires deleting the replies individually.

I love it when something that isn't broken gets "fixed"... Wonder if I
    can back out these "upgrades".

You mean that funny "tree" button doesn't work for you?

Wow! After clicking the funny tree button (which I hadn't noticed
before) I got five separate pop up messages, one for each branch of the
thread. There was no "Reply" button so I had to right click on the
message and select "Follow up to Newsgroup" to reply.

    What a crock...

Dan, you are slowly being dragged into the world of only viewing as if you were viewing in Google Groups!

Thank you to all. I've finally got the Thunderbird / eternal-september setup working.
