.. The first S-500 "Triumfator-M" units will enter service ..
The S-500 is Russia's upcoming next-generation flagship missile system, promising across-the-board performance improvements over the already- formidable S-400 Triumf. The S-500 is reportedly capable of intercepting hypersonic cruise missiles and other aerial targets - including unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAVs) and potentially even certain types of low-orbit satellites - flying at speeds of over Mach 5. The system has an
operational range of 600 km against ballistic missiles and 500 km for
area defense, a substantial improvement over the S-400. It can track and
target up to ten warheads flying at four miles per second, employing
distinct radar systems optimized for different types of targets.

Aside from its purported ability to intercept hypersonic threats, the
S-500's other major contribution to Russian military capabilities is
against stealth technology .. A "silver bullet" against next-generation

.. US Is Failing With Its Hypersonic Program ..

In a major setback, the US Air Force's second attempt to conduct the
flight test of a hypersonic weapon proved to be a dud. The two successive failures perhaps explain why the US military is lagging ..

    Russia Is Far Ahead

As the US Air Force faced two successive failures, Russia and China have achieved success in developing their hypersonic weaponry. Russia has
three major hypersonic weapons - the Avangard, the Kinzhal, and the
Zircon .. And all of them cleared tests .. The Avangard hypersonic intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is the most potent among all
three .. The first regiment of Avangard hypersonic missiles was put into service in December 2019 ..

Why Hypersonic Missiles Are Real Game Changers ..

But let's lower our sights a little from ICBMs and IRBMs [and even
subsonic cruise missiles] to a quite ancient missile technology, the
Soviet-era Scud, first introduced into service in 1957! A recent case
with a Houthi Scud missile fired at Saudi Arabia in December 2017
shows just how difficult missile interception really is ..

The Houthi missile, identified as an Iranian-made Burqan-2 [a copy of
a North Korean Scud, itself a copy of a Chinese copy of the original
Russian Scud from the 1960s], flew over 600 miles before hitting the
Riyadh international airport. The US-made Patriot missile defense
system fired FIVE interceptor shots .. - all of them missed!

.. This was not the first time that Patriot 'missile defense' against
this supposedly obsolete missile failed spectacularly .. During the
first Gulf War, the United States claimed a near-perfect record in
shooting down Iraqi variants of the Scud. Subsequent analyses found
that nearly all the interceptions had failed. Why is shooting down
Scuds so difficult? Because this was arguably the world's first
hypersonic missile [it flies at M 5 and does MANEUVER]! ..

Clearly the US is many years away from fielding a working hypersonic
missile. These early tests were only supposed to test the rocket, and
carried a dummy 'glide vehicle' which is supposed to separate from the
rocket once it reaches a speed of about M 6 or so, and then glide to
its target while maneuvering. The prototype missile would carry a
frangible surrogate for that [glide] vehicle that would disintegrate
    after release ..

Zircon .. is in fact groundbreaking .. The next generation of such
missiles .. will be even smaller and more capable .. An even bigger
engineering accomplishment is the astonishing Avangard boost-glide
vehicle .. The bottom line is that these new Russian technologies ..
are game-changing because they are UNSTOPPABLE with today's air defense technology. Just like the Plains Indians couldn't hope to stop, with
their bows and arrows, the US cavalry with their repeating rifles. Even
more profound may be the psychological effect that Russia's engineering accomplishments must be exerting on the American psyche ..

Sure it has the Bolshoi and pristine Red Square with its luxury shopping
at the Tsum. And yes, unlike New York and Sao Paulo and Mumbai, no one
is asking you for food and spare change on every street corner. But when
it comes to overall quality of life, Russia ranks lower than all of the
big emerging markets. Even Mexico with its corruption and drug lords
    does better.

According to the big data cost of living number crunchers at Numbeo,
Russia's biggest problems are weather; Moscow traffic that makes the 405
in Los Angeles and the Marginal in Sao Paulo seem tame; outrageous real
estate prices in city centers, and pollution. Russia may be known for
great culture, world-class great museums and home to one of the world's

Moscow is home to more billionaires per capita than any other city. And
while most of them may actually live in London full time, it is not
uncommon to hear the roar of a McLaren marking its territory on the Krasnopresnenskaya road along the Moscow River. Real estate there is
expensive, but according to Numbeo, not as expensive as Shanghai. The
price per square foot is 59.3% cheaper in the city center of Moscow than
it is in Shanghai. A three-bedroom rental in the city center is around
    25% cheaper in Moscow.

This high housing cost in China, coupled with its massive air quality
problem, has the biggest of the BRIC countries ranked behind Russia.

Sao Paulo city ranks well below Brazil's average cost of living score of
94.29 due to crime, pollution, traffic jams, and housing. The city gets
    a 59. That's lousy.

Brazil's overall low cost of living makes it better than Russia. Sao

Oddly enough, despite being one of the most productive agriculture
states in the world, bananas in Sao Paulo city cost 30% more than they
do in Moscow; eggs cost 58% more in Sao Paulo than in Moscow; a loaf of
bread cost 163% more in Sao Paulo than in Moscow. Even water (+18.4%)
and domestic beer (53.39%) cost more in Sao Paulo than in Moscow,
    according to Numbeo data.

Yet, thanks to great weather and a relatively low cost of living
nationwide, Brazil life is better than Russia life.

Numbeo surveys cost of living, purchasing power, housing, air quality,
crime rates, healthcare and traffic commute times in its quality of life
index. Users can compare cities against each other in terms of cost on a
number of consumer items as well as housing and electricity bills.

    The Americans vs The Russkiyes

Numbeo's Quality of Life Index gauge goes from 0 to 200. The higher the
number, the better. In this regard, the U.S. scores a 180.02 overall.
It's top five cities with near perfect scores are San Diego (197.7),
Dallas (191.8), Columbus (190.6), San Jose (190) and Portland (187.7).

In terms of cost of living, however, our best cities are more expensive
than Russia's. The top five are over the top in terms of cost, with
Numbeo giving a score of 100 for the highest cost of living in a given
    country.

New York scores a 100, followed by Honolulu (97.7), San Francisco
    (97.3), Anchorage (96.8) and Washington DC (93).

Russia's best cities are more affordable for the locals who live there.
The top five are Moscow (48.8), St. Petersburg (45.7), Yekaterinburg
    (39.5), Novosibirsk (37) and Kazan (34.69).

Within the main segments of Numbeo's Cost of Living power gauge, here's
    the winner:

    Amerikantsy Russians
    Purchasing Power Index: 122.48 48.97
    Safety Index: 51.69 53.81
    Health Care Index: 68.27 56.12
    Climate Index: 68.01 12.32
Cost of Living Index: 74.13 43.28
Property Price to Income Ratio: 3.23 13.16
    Traffic Commute Time: 34.41 49.33
    Pollution Index: 31.32 63.52

These numbers can be confusing at first blush. A high number can
indicate a negative. For instance, a higher pollution index number is
worse than a lower one, so U.S. air quality is better than Russia's.

A higher climate index is better than a lower one, as it means the
country has warmer and more diverse weather regions suitable for
different outdoor activities and longer growing seasons for farmers.
Russia scores better on safety and cost of living.

Worth noting, as healthcare remains top-of-mind in the U.S., the
healthcare index scores us better than the Russians.

The components of the health care system surveyed by Numbeo respondents
include things like medical staff competency, quality of medical
equipment and diagnosis, insurance costs, and convenience and
    availability of doctors.

Russia scores a 60 in terms of cost, beating the U.S. hands-down. U.S. respondents gave cost satisfaction a 46.7 out of a possible score of 200.

Wiped out within weeks, Afghan military was built over 20 years with $20
mn .. US helped build Afghan military with $83mn, over 20 years .. The surrenders seem to be happening as fast as the Taliban can travel ..

The swift offensive has resulted in mass surrenders, captured
helicopters and millions of dollars of U.S.-supplied equipment paraded
by the Taliban on grainy cellphone videos .. The Taliban .. walked in
with little or no resistance .. This implosion comes despite the United States having poured more than $83 billion in weapons, equipment and
training into the country's security forces over two decades .. The
United States' 20-year endeavor to rebuild Afghanistan's military into a robust and independent fighting force has failed, and that failure is
now playing out in real time as the country slips into Taliban control.

    ...

It looks epic and will go down in history.

Costs of the Afghanistan war ..

At just short of 20 years, the now-ending U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan was America's longest war .. Its death toll is in the many tens of thousands. And because the U.S. borrowed most of the money to pay for it, generations of Americans will be burdened by the cost of paying it off .. Here's a look at
the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan, by the numbers ..

Estimated amount of direct Afghanistan and Iraq war costs that the United States has debt-financed as of 2020: $2 trillion. Estimated interest costs by 2050: Up to $6.5 trillion.

THE WARS END. THE COSTS DON'T:
Amount Bilmes estimates the United States has committed to pay in health care, disability, burial and other costs for roughly 4 million Afghanistan and Iraq veterans: more than $2 trillion.
Period those costs will peak: after 2048.

    ...

In most news the figure of 2,448 dead American servicemen is circulating, but no one mentions 3,846 dead American "contractors" (plus also 1,144 servicemen from other NATO states).

It looks like a classic corrupt scheme when the state-linked structures get most of the state funding while most of the real 'dirty' work is outsourced to 'contractors'.

No wonder the outcome is so pathetic.

Indeed but Tajaikistan does have a border with afghanistan and Russia

    Soviet-Afghan War, 1979-1989

On December 24, 1979, in a desperate attempt to stabilize its prop-up government and save its Communist empire, the Red Army invaded
Afghanistan. Previous experience with guerrilla war tactics did nothing
to stop the Soviets from rolling into Afghanistan with heavy artillery
and strategy ill-suited for the terrain and adversary.[1] They were
ready to fight a classic theater war. The prevailing Soviet
military-industrial complex eclipsed the ability of leaders to approach
the war in Afghanistan in an unconventional way.[2] But indeed, the
    mujahideen was an unconventional enemy.

Many factors contributed to the Soviet failure in Afghanistan. The
empire was already limping when it launched its campaign in 1979, and it
was not prepared for such a brutal and costly war. The occupation lacked popular support back home in the USSR. The Afghan army was weak, and the mujahideen was supported through American and Pakistani programs
supplying weaponry and finances, strengthening already dedicated
fighters. The Afghans, hardly modernized, were still a formidable force.
Not quite united, but not totally uncoordinated, resistance fighters
came together just long enough to see the Soviets expelled.

The mass murder of civilians in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation
was inevitable due to the nature of guerrilla war. Mujahideen fighters
blended in well, both to the rural Afghan countryside and the tribal
people. Before long, the frustrated Soviets hardly bothered to
distinguish between civilians and insurgents, resorting to mass killing campaigns. In order to destroy the support base for guerrillas, the
Soviets “felt it necessary to suppress defenseless civilians by killing
them indiscriminately, by compelling them to flee abroad, and by
destroying their crops and means of irrigation, the basis of their
livelihood. The dropping of booby traps from the air, the planting of
mines, and the use of chemical substances, though not on a wide scale,
were also meant to serve the same purpose.”[3]

Retributive murder, as in other instances of war, was commonplace. On
one occasion, two hundred noncombatants in the town of Tashqurghan were
killed in revenge for the death of three Russian soldiers in April
1982.[4] The Red Army specifically targeted large gatherings, especially mosques. In another instance of violence, the Soviets fired rockets on a wedding ceremony in the village of Ganjabad in 1980. As a result of the attacks, roughly 150 people were killed.[5] These are just two of many
    such events.

The brutality of the Soviet effort in Afghanistan displaced millions of
people, specifically women and children. Neighboring Pakistan and Iran
absorbed over 5 million refugees, nearly a quarter of the population.[6]
The Red Army disregarded all norms of conduct and unabashedly targeted
children by disguising land mines as toys. Despite demining efforts, to
this day, children are often maimed or killed by the mines that remain.[7]

In the last 50 years, the United States has spent around $10 trillion on overseas wars ranging from Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and elsewhere
in Africa and Latin America. Doling out trillions of dollars collected
from taxpayers only on wars without winning and causing millions of deaths, America's moment of truth has arrived. History teaches us the lesson that
the decline of power gets an impetus when the people and the government of
the concerned power deviate from the path of accountability, truth,
innovation and justice. Arrogance and ignorance of America despite its
abundant wealth were unable to prevent the irreversible process of its
decline unleashed since the end of the Vietnam War and culminating in its abrupt, unplanned and chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan ..

Thus the infamous Obama-authorized "drone war" killed 10 - 25 (by various estimates) innocent per one legit target. The US servicemen are fat and accustomed to take war as a computer shooting game, so it's natural they
would like to kill indiscriminately, and if there's even a little danger

then they would shoot haphazardly in a panic.

is that your way of admitting that the superior russian military lacks sufficient capability to provide computer(s support) to its Heer

BTW, are you of the "reactionary" Smirnoff vodka clan?  If so, good
idea to become a "Smirnov" instead and probably best to keep that
quiet given the KGB Putin in power!

    It's off topic.

BTW, we are still waiting for you to provide figures on deaths,
injuries, material loss, graft of russia while in Afghanistan
