The head of defence contractor Raytheon has said the US is years behind
China in its pursuit of hypersonic weapons which can bob and weave
through the atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound.
Hypersonics capability is “the most destabilising threat to the
homeland. The time to react is very, very short,” said Gregory Hayes,
CEO of Raytheon Technologies, which is developing a hypersonic cruise
    missile with the US military.

The X-15 was that fast but at those speeds of 3,500+ mph you can't just
"bob and weave through the atmosphere," it is too fast for that, and for any extended flight the fuel goes rapidly.

Targeting control systems might have a tough time as well having any
    kind of accuracy.

Hypersonic ballistic missiles have been around since the 1950s and
    they are accurate.
